The 3G Pitch At Merthyr |
Merthyr FC, with several former Hereford United players and staff involved, look set for promotion to the Southern League Premiership.
This afternoon they defeated Tiverton Town 4-1 and in truth the margin could have been higher had the Martyrs took all their chances.
Merthyr took the lead but Tiverton draw level when the home defence failed to deal with a corner.
However in the second half it was all Merthyr who entertained their supporters with continual attacks on the Tiverton goal.
There were 681 at the gate which might have been higher but for the Welsh rugby game taking place at the same time.
The Martyrs lead the Southern League South and West with 85 points from 35 games and an exceptional 70 goal difference. Taunton are in second place some 13 points behind despite having played the same number of the games.
Steve Jenkins |
The Martyrs are managed by Steve Jenkins who worked so hard alongside Peter Beadle at Edgar Street last season.
Before the game Jenkins told BN that he was pleased to hear that Hereford FC were making so much progress given what had happened.
Ryan Green |
Former Hereford United player Ryan Green captained the side and was unlucky not to score with a header early in the game.
Bauza Happy To Have Scored |
Another former Bull Guillen Bauza scored the Martyr's third goal.
Gavin Williams |
However Gavin Williams, who spent six seasons at Edgar Street, didn't play as he was suspended.
Meanwhile a Birmingham scout watched the game.
Talking to BN after the match he said he felt Colin Hill was the man behind Tommy Agombar when he 'owned' Hereford United.
Colin Hill is the brother of Garry Hill who is currently in charge at Woking.
