"The Man In The Jumper Deserves Another Shot"

Newport County journalist Michael Pearlman reviewed Peter Beadle's reign at the Exiles in 2010. The following is extracts from his piece here (link):

We can’t forget that Beadle took over a club firmly in the relegation mire, rock bottom of the Blue Square South after seven games on the 2005/06 campaign.

Beadle promised to improve things little by little and he did just that.

Inspired signings such as Paul Cochlin and John Brough, Tony Pennock and Craig Hughes lifted the Exiles to what was described on the front page of the County match day programme as ‘The Great Escape.’ The tide had turned for County and more quality signings arrived, players like Glyn Thompson, Charlie Griffin and Julian Alsop turning the Exiles into promotion candidates, only to fall short in what was an emotionally exhausting season.

In the league, a huge backlog of fixtures caught up with County, who just missed out on the play-offs despite losing just two of their final 13 games.

The following season was a similar story but again the Exiles fell short in the league, this time ending with just one point from the final three games (all at home) when a solitary win would have got them over the line. It was all over for Beadle.

Other than adding that Beadle declined extra funds for players in his final months as boss, opting not to unsettle his squad as he felt they were on course to meet their target (worth mentioning in the interests of balance) those are the facts.

And so for now, Beadle remains in football limbo, a manager older, wiser and ready for another shot in the sport that has been his whole life.

The majority of County fans reading this column will always be grateful for what he achieved at the club and while Exiles supporters are currently getting all they could wish for, it would be a lovely bonus if Beadle were to get back into management.

He might not be the man who took County to the next level, but surely the Amber Army will always be thankful for how close he came.

The man in the jumper deserves another shot.
