Gateshead FC were formed in 1939 when neighbours South Shields,
members of the old Football League Division 3 North, moved to Gateshead due to
financial difficulties. As Gateshead
they reached the quarter-final of the FA Cup in 1953. In 1960 they lost their
League status to Peterborough United in the end of season AGM Cup voting. An application to join the Scottish League
was refused and they spent a period in various northern combinations before
becoming founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968 but The Club
only lasted until 1973 when financial problems led to its demise.
A new club was formed as Gateshead United before, once
again, South Shields (then in the Northern Prem) sold their ground and moved to
Gateshead Stadium to play as United.
Sadly, the club only survived for a couple of years before another
phoenix (this time as Gateshead FC) rose from the ashes.
“The Heed” have yo-yoed to and from The Conference over the
years rejoining most recently in the 2009/10 season.
Backed by former Sunderland FC Vice-Chairman Graham Wood,
they have plans to move away from the chronic pitch problems of the
International Stadium and build their own ground. They finished in 17th place last season and are
currently managed by newly appointed Gary Mills who had previously succeeded
Martin Foyle at York City.
Visiting fans are normally accommodated in the north end of
the seated Tyne and Wear Main Stand where there is space for up to 400. The
concourses provide Sky TV and refreshments including a bar. Admission is believed to be £14 for adults,
£9 for concessions and £2 for U16’s.
HUISA – departs from Radford’s at 7.00am with a fare of £30
(non-members £32). Seats can be booked
through The Club office (08442 761939).
FUNPLANE – Fully booked
BY CAR – Worcester, M5, M42, A42, M1. At M! Junction 32 join the M18 (Sign
Hull). At junction 38 continue forward
onto the A1 (sign The North, Leeds).
Continue forward onto the A1M (sign The North, Wetherby). At junction 51, continue forward onto the A1
(sign The North). At junction 56
continue forward onto the A1M (sign Darlington, Newcastle). Just past the Washington Service Area keep
in the right lane and bear right onto the A194M (sign Tyne Tunnel, South
Shields). After about 3.5 miles you
will reach the White Mare Pool roundabout where you should take the first exit
to join the A184 (sign Gateshead, Newcastle). BEWARE of trigger-happy speed
cameras on the A184. At the roundabout,
continue forward (2nd exit) on the A184 (Abbotsford Road) then at
the traffic lights, turn right onto Old Fold Road and bear right onto Neilson
Road. The stadium will be clearly
visible to your right. Distance is
about 265 miles and you should allow a little over four and a half hours
driving time. Postcode for SAT NAV is
NE10 0EF.
ANGEL OF THE NORTH ROUTE – Fans wishing to visit or pass
close to the Angel of The North sculpture should follow the above route to the
A194M junction but then continue to the left on the A1(M). At the next interchange (Gateshead South)
leave the A1(M) following signs for the A167 (Durham Road). The “Angel” is just a few hundred yards from
the junction. Retrace your tracks back
to the A1 (South) and follow signs for A194M to continue to the stadium.
PARKING – There are three free-of-charge car parks at the
stadium.
TRAIN – Newcastle Central then the Metro to Gateshead
Stadium.
ALEHOUSES – Nearest is The Schooner, which is a five-minute
walk from the stadium on the banks of the River Tyne. A Metro trip to the centre of Newcastle is probably the best bet.
Enjoy.
