It's not often a regular contributer to BN has a book, let alone an e-book, published but Simon Wright is an exception.
And whilst, to date, all his books have been about West Brom - the club he grew up with, Wright has also followed the fortunes of Hereford United and was a contributer to Talking Bull before its demise.
The 1990’s is a neglected period in West Bromwich Albion’s recent history, a whole decade ignored of low technology, fences, terraces, smoking and 3pm kick-offs. Football is far more than an hour and an half of passive entertainment, it’s about people, family, places, history, social culture – it’s a way of life. The Flight of the Throstle trilogy aims to fill the 1990’s gap before precious emotional memories fail completely.
In Part One (1990-1993), Simon Wright (author of ‘West Brom’s Cult Heroes’ and ‘West Brom’s Greatest Games’), examines how Albion slipped into the League’s third tier and escaped Phoenix-like, only after two years of struggle. His narrative is weaved around his first-hand experiences and supported by numerous quotes and memories from players, management, Chairmen and supporters. These years of fan power and alfresco football are leavened with numerous humourous anecdotes.
Here's one review:
I've been an admirer of this author since his fanzine writing days. Having purchased his two earlier books, I was one of the first to buy this e-book. How would I describe it ? Well-crafted and authoritative would do for starters. I love the anecdotes and the honesty. Choosing this period to review was always going to be brave and thankfully Simon always tries for a rounded perspective.
