Hereford United club historian Ron Parrott has been delving back through the archives of the Bulls following last Saturday's 4-3 triumph at Northampton after being 3-0 down at half-time.
ITS BEEN A LONG 50 YEARS!
What a woeful and then wonderful day it was on Saturday! Only once before in the history of the Club has a United side come back from 3-0 down to triumph 4-3 and as a memory tester I wonder how many of you paid attention to my "50 years ago" historical piece in the Port Vale programme? Yes, it was all about the Bulls trailing 3-0 at the interval at Wisbech Town (October 8th 1960) in the old Southern League then hitting back to win 4-3. Coincidence or what? If it's another 50 years till it happens again, I certainly won't be here to see it. (That season the Bulls finished 4th in that league - ed)
For the record, other major comebacks have been in 1945/46 when we were losing 3-0 at home to the old enemy Worcester City after only 11 minutes but hit back to claim a 4-4 draw. In 1959/60 United were 4-1 down at Barry Town but claimed a 4-4 draw and in 1965/66, we were 3-0 down at Tonbridge and managed a 3-3 draw.
To balance matters, coincidentally we have also only twice managed the situation in reverse in the Club's history. In 1946/47 we were leading 3-0 at home to Cheltenham Town in the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup but managed to lose it 4-3 and in 1956/57 we were 3-0 up at half-time at Chelmsford City and yes, you've guessed it, we somehow contrived to lose it 4-3.
