Hartlepool lead the table after a 4-2 win over Colchester, for whom ex-Cheltenham man Steven Gillespie scored both goals. Northampton are second on alphabetical order after beating the Robins by the same score in a game that saw three penalties from referee Graham Horwood. Swindon beat Tranmere 3-1 and Leicester beat MK Dons 2-0 with a pair of Matty Fryatt goals. That result means MK Dons start the season at the bottom of the table as the only side to lose without scoring.
Oldham beat Millwall 4-3 but only after the Lions were reduced to ten men. They were 3-1 up until Paul Robinson's dismissal saw the Latics score three times in the last 17 minutes. Carlisle beat Bristol Rovers 3-2, and Brighton won 2-1 at Crewe. Leeds came from behind to beat Scunthorpe 2-1 in a lunchtime kick off. Southend also claimed three points after scoring the only goal of the game against Peterboro. Huddersfield and Stockport drew 1-1, as did Yeovil and Walsall.
In League Two, Aldershot won their first game 'back' in the League at Accrington in front of 1,805 - 1,000 of them their own fans. Dagenham spanked Chester 6-0, but could only attract 1,434. Shrewsbury, now bookies favourites for the division, opened up with a 4-0 demolition of Macclesfield. Rotherham attracted 4,748 to Sheffield for their opening win - only 90 less than their last match at Millmoor. Luton lost their opener 3-1 on the back of a team only signed yesterday.
In the Conference, Wrexham must think it's easy after Graham Westley's expensive Stevenage side were thumped 5-0 in front of nearly 5,000. Mansfield had a more realistic experience, coming back from two down to draw 2-2 at Eastbourne.
