Colin Addison, who has managed several local clubs including Hereford United during his long career, has told the Welsh Press that it would be a sad day for Welsh sport should Merthyr Tydfil be wound up.
The Martyrs are in the High Court next week to challenge a wind-up petition. They are rumoured to owe the Inland Revenue over £20,000 and there are other creditors as well.
"It will be a very sad day if the club are roped into a winding-up order," said Addison who managed Merthyr twice in a ten year period.
"But, in my time at the club, they always seemed to be fighting a financial plight. It’s a fantastic club and there are so many people who work hard for no return, other than to see the club continue.
"I just hope they can get through what are obviously difficult times."
Director and comedian Owen Money (apt name in the circumstances) said: "We have a meeting on Saturday and I’m sure we can work something out. But it will be tough."
Merthyr are the latest in a long list of Welsh clubs with financial problems. At the top, Championship club Cardiff City are said to be around £24M in debt.
