Hereford 4-0 Kington Town

For tonight's County Cup Semi-Final, Hereford manager Pete Beadle fielded a relatively strong starting XI against local side Kington Town. With a Hartpury College fixture ruling out a number of Hereford’s regular starters for the second week in a row, youngster Carlos Moreira, Anthony Robbins and Max Kontic-Coveney started in place of Dylan Bonella, Joe Tumelty and Aaron Birch who all dropped to the bench from the side that lost to Highgate United last week.

Hereford kicked off attacking the Blackfriars End in the first half, and were first to threaten. After Anthony Robbins was fouled on the edge of the area, Rob Purdie tried his luck from the resulting free kick, but his low right-footed effort was easily saved by Bryan Kirkham.

As the quarter of an hour mark passed, Kington skipper Joe Mayglothling came close to breaking the deadlock after breaking through Hereford’s defence. Mayglothling did well to create enough space to get a shot away, but he failed to control his strike as it easily cleared the roof of the empty Meadow End terrace.

In the 19th minute, Rob Purdie, who was present when Hereford last played Kington 10 years ago, burst through the centre with just the keeper left to beat. After rounding Kington’s sprawling keeper, he managed to find the back of the net to open the scoring.

The home side continued to dominate the game, and 4 minutes later they increased their lead through John Mills. After Anthony Robbins had done well to win possession, James Pilling and Carlos Moreira combined effectively as a cross was whipped in from the left. After only scoring one goal since the 16th January, the unmarked Mills had little trouble in converting the cross to double Hereford’s lead.

Throughout the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, Hereford were unlucky not to grab another goal.
Firstly, Ross Staley did well to cut the ball into the box from the right, but his chipped effort was easily caught by Kirkham.
Moments later, John Mills saw his right-footed shot denied by the upright after he did well to work himself a shooting opportunity.

HT: Hereford 2 - Kington Town 0

4 minutes after the restart, Kington conceded a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box as Ross Staley was brought down. As Cheltenham loanee James Bowen stepped up to take the free kick, his rising effort went high and wide of the target.

Following a good spell of possession, in the 55th minute, Anthony Robbins did well to chase a long-ball forward from Joel Edwards, but his strike from the left-hand side of the box went harmlessly wide. 2 minutes later, Robbins had another chance to add to Hereford’s goal tally after Max Kontic-Coveney did well to feed him a neat ball. Despite turning and getting a shot away, he failed to strike the ball with any conviction as the keeper had little difficultly in claiming the effort.

On the stroke of the 69th minute, Kington created their best chance of the game. Miles Langford’s powerful 25-yard strike left Martin Horsell well-beaten, but ricocheted out off the crossbar.

4 minutes later, Hereford managed to put the game to bed with the first of 2 goals in 2 minutes. With Rob Purdie delivering an inswinging corner into the heart of the box, Ross Staley grabbed his second goal since joining Hereford as he found the back of the net with a well-directed header.

The onslaught continued from Hereford as John Mills made it 4. After some good build up play between Purdie and Kontic-Coveney, James Bowen played the ball into the box and Mills managed to get his head on the ball to divert it past Kirkham for his second goal of the game.

The Bulls continued to create chances for themselves, and with 3 minutes left on the clock substitute Aaron Birch won possession and managed to find Dylan Bonella in space. With Bonella looking to try his luck from range, his left-footed effort forced the keeper into making a fine save as the ball was pushed around the post. From the resulting corner, Jordan Cooper cleared the ball as far as Joe Tumelty, but he dragged his low drive wide of the upright.

Beadle On the HFA Cup-tie

Peter Beadle
Hereford FC manager Peter Beadle gave his reaction to the press after his side defeated Kington Town 4-0 in this evening's HFA Challenge Cup-Tie at Edgar Street.

He started by talking about the Kington performance.

"I thought they were very good," said Beadle.

"I thought they worked really hard and they caused us one or two problems second half and they stuck at it.

"We scored goals at good times so we're pleased with the performance and pleased to be back on the winning road again."

John Mills played the whole 90 minutes.

"John has been on the bench for a couple of games and then got back into the team on Tuesday night but he needs a couple of games to get sharp, to get busy.

"It was perfect for him."

It's Loughborough University on Saturday.

"They are all tough games, we don't get easy games because we are everybody's cup-final as we showed tonight.

"Kington are two leagues below where we are, they've had an up and down season but they gave us a real good game tonight but tonight was their cup-final.

"So we don't expect anything different on Saturday, we've just got to make sure we're better.

"Everyone seems to be fine, those that needed a game Robbo, Max and Carlos did well tonight. Ross has had another good ninety minutes under his belt so I'm pleased with that.

"We're happy with the game, happy with the result, happy with the performance."

More about Carlos.

"He did well, like I said he's in a bit of a difficult position because he's between youth team and first team. He played for Pegasus on Saturday, we wanted to get him a regular game and he scored so that will do his confidence the world of good.

"He did well tonight, he looked lively but he's got a long way to go, he's a young boy, he's 17 but the fact that he can hold his own with us is a great start. He's got promise."

Any thoughts about playing the final on Bank Holiday Monday and not going to Alvechurch?

"No, not really. The games has got to be played when they've got to be played. Sometimes it's not ideal but as the games come along we'll tick them off and play them when they are ready."

Finally will Pablo Haysham and Mike Symons be fit for Saturday?

"Hopefully they'll be okay, that's why they've not played tonight. Hopefully they'll be okay for Saturday."

News Round-Up

Worcester City have announced they will end their groundshare at Kidderminster's Aggborough stadium at the end of the current season. A club statement has called the deal 'unaffordable in the long term' and that the club will now seek an alternative site for the 2016/17 season. Sites at Evesham and Bromsgrove are both reported to be under consideration.

Quorn have announced plans to build a 64 bedroom care home on an astro turf pitch at their Farley Way home. The club say they cannot afford to upgrade the existing ageing facility, so intend to use funds from the development to install a community use 3G facility on their main pitch and upgrade the floodlighting to LED technology. They say their long term aim is to progress up the football pyramid.

Former Chester City player, and briefly owner, Stephen Vaughan Jnr has been warned he faces jail after admitting a charge of perverting the course of justice after acknowledging he helped the killer of PC Neil Doyle escape the country by lending him his car to flee to Germany. Radio Reporting

Jonathan Pearce has reported on several non-league games recently involving Hereford FC.

Below is how he covered two of those games.

Hartley Wintney v Hereford in the same round was a fantastic game to be able to cover, but this, more so than Camberley, was always going to have its low points. The official capacity of Hartley Wintney’s ground (Memorial Playing Fields) is 1,300 and therefore any venue with a similar capacity is most likely to not need the paraphanalia associated with high (or even low) profile media.
This fixture was a complete one-off, particularly as more away fans than home would actually be in attendance. Although Hereford now play in an equivalent league to Hartley Wintney they still retain a guaranteed 3000 plus fan base and this is on average at least ten times more than Hartleys standard home attendance. I therefore had to use their only covered seating in the entire ground (of which has around 100 seats) and do all my reports from over the phone, whilst making sure my battery stayed charged (or with a reasonable back up on hand) AND whilst noting on paper with no desk in an extremely squashed environment.
Ultimately, you need to describe to the listener what is happening and this is still possible but clearly overall, quite uncomfortable. When on the job it is very rare to actually consider all of this though. Only now can I sit back and reflect.
Finally Hereford against Camberley (FA Vase Quarter Final) last Saturday had the best facilities of the lot, but fairly as you would expect, with their past football league guise. This did not however prevent a period of confusion from my side, once arriving at the ground. Though press seating was in abundance with space aplenty, even from the very best seats, phone lines were not obviously attainable. The initial row of press seating at Edgar Street (regularly used by radio) only had one obvious phone point, of which the front casing had been damaged.
Not wanting to risk further damage we (me and assistant Simon) were forced to wait for assistance from our fellow radio colleagues who pointed out that the socket was actually still secure but underneath the point itself.  Furthermore our ISDN kit (which had been brought along due to the high-profile nature of the fixture) could not even be opened and set-up until we found a local supply of scissors to undo its cable tie. It’s unique and expensive nature means it’s casing does not self lock. Once all these issues had been fixed there was still time to experience issues with the equipment itself.
Once eveything is properly running, a broadcaster is able to hear the relevant show going out through headphones, whilst having a microphone connected into which he can speak to the studio based producer instantaneously. We had all of this but our producer could not hear from their end. Thus, an already knackered ‘dial’ button had to be pressed again as we dialled back ‘in’ to the studio. With an also swift insertion of our back up microphone, hey presto! Our producer could hear us from base and everything was FINALLY running. We’d made the show, our audio quality was better than on the phone, and listeners across Surrey and Sussex would hear all the incredible moments from that afternoon’s game played out. All of that though, before we had even got going.
So there you have it, radio sports reporting is by far a piece of cake. Hence next time you listen in to Mark Pougatch on 5Live or his namesake Mr Saggers on TalkSport, consider all of the above, besides the weather conditions, and give a little more thought to your hardy sports reporters. We are just normal fans like you, there, so you don’t need to be!

From The Archives: Bulls cruise into local final

Hereford face Kington Town tonight and it's been 10 years since the last meeting. Here's a look back to Tuesday 14th February 2006

Bulls cruise into local final

Hereford United put seven past local side Kington Town in a one sided encounter at Park Road this evening in front of around 250 supporters. A strong eleven was put out by Graham Turner including youngster Sam Gwynne as captain. Craig Mawson started in goal, Alex Jeannin played in an unfamiliar place in the middle of defence and Rob Purdie returned after illness. Stuart Fleetwood partnered Andy Williams up front.

United made a lively start to the game with Gwynne looking dangerous, he fired a decent drive forcing Kington keeper Kirkham to tip over. From the resulting corner, The Bulls took the lead. Dean Beckwith collected in the box and passed to Williams, who, from 8 yards, shot past the helpless Kirkham. Good work down the right from Daryl Taylor nearly resulted in a second for Hereford when Stanley connected well on the volley from the cross but Kirkham was equal to it. Fleetwood's low shot from 20 yards was easily held by Kirkham but United were looking more and more like getting a second as the half progressed. Gwynne played a neat ball through the home side's defence and Fleetwood once again managed to get a shot in, this time it caused the 'keeper more concern but again he pulled of a decent save. Hereford finally made it two just minutes after; Williams did well to play in Fleetwood and his left foot shot gave the 'keeper no chance, scoring for the first time for Hereford.

Shortly after Rob Purdie's pace was too much for the Kington defence to handle as he ran into the box and was bought down. Simon Travis stepped up as the unlikely penalty taker, but he confidentally dispatched it into the corner giving Hereford a three goal advantage. Jeannin had a free kick tipped over by Kirkham and the 'keeper denied Fleetwood a second when his curling effort was parried out, but United had a strong appeal for a penalty at the end of the first half. Williams ran past the defender and was blatantly bought down, yet the referee failed to award a penalty, probably because of the earlier decision to award one.

Turner kept with the same eleven to start the second half, deciding against resting any first team players for the trip to Canvey. Fleetwood searched for a second as he took on the Kington defence, but after beating the keeper his touch was heavy and he couldn't direct the ball into the back of the net. A quick corner gave Fleetwood the opportunity to curl a shot but it narrowly missed the far top corner.
Stansfield came on for Jeannin and took up a role in central defence, and youngster Adam Worton replaced Purdie. Kington failed to test Mawson throughout the game, but their number 9 went close with a long range effort. Stanley raced on to a Fleetwood through ball, and was bought down by the 'keeper and the ref had no option but to give the second penalty of the game. Up stepped Fleetwood, who made no mistake, blasting home for his second of the evening.

Another youngster Kane Kahaki replaced Andy Williams, with Stansfield switching back to his preferred role up front. Gwynne picked up a booking for a late challenge which some supporters thought was harsh. The Bulls then took full advantage of a tiring Kington side, Ryan Green linked up well with Daryl Taylor down the right before delivering a inch perfect cross for Stansfield, who bagged his first of the evening. Yet it was Stansfield's strike partner, Fleetwood who made the biggest impression by gaining his hattrick. He curled a free-kick past the helpless Kirkham to make it six.

Stansfield then missed a simple chance after Stanley's toe poke had been blocked. Stansfield fired the rebound over the bar when it looked easier to score, but it was Stansfield who completed the rout by making it seven, running down the left hand side of the box before firing home from 15 yards.
Hereford won the game with ease, as they were expected despite the difficult playing conditions. Fleetwood will be pleased that he is off the mark with his hattrick, and Gwynne impressed in his midfield role. Youngsters Worton and Kahaki got their first ever senior games, but praise must all be given to Kington goalie Kirkham who made a string of good saves throughout the game to keep the score at just seven.

HUFC: Mawson, Green, Travis, Beckwith, Jeannin, Taylor, Gwynne, Stanley, Purdie, Williams, Fleetwood.
Subs: Lewis, Stansfield, Ferrell, Kahaki, Worton.
