Former Hereford United midfielder forced to retire

Former Bull Harry Pell, left, with Ryan Bowman as the Bulls played Shrewsbury in the FA Cup
Former Hereford United midfielder Harry Pell has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.

Pell confirmed his decision in a statement on social media, saying that after “a great deal of thought” and with his body “telling me enough is enough”, he felt the time was right to step away from the game.

The midfielder’s decision follows ongoing injury problems after suffering a serious ACL injury in 2024 while playing for Cheltenham Town. Pell attempted a brief return to football with Bath City, but after further medical consultations and consideration for his long-term future, he has now opted to retire.

During his career, Pell reached the milestone of 500 professional appearances, an achievement he described as something he could only have dreamed of earlier in his career.

Pell was with Hereford United between 2011 and 2013. Signed by Jamie Pitman from Bristol Rovers, initially on loan, he went on to make 60 appearances for the Bulls, becoming a regular figure in midfield during that period.

After leaving Hereford, Pell enjoyed a long Football League career, making more than 350 EFL appearances. His other clubs included AFC Wimbledon, Colchester United and Accrington Stanley, establishing himself as a combative and experienced midfielder across the divisions.

In his retirement statement, Pell thanked the clubs he represented, his teammates, coaches and support staff, as well as supporters “across the country”. He also paid tribute to his family and friends for their backing throughout his career.

While bringing his playing career to an end, Pell said his love for the game would remain and that he is looking forward to taking on new challenges away from the pitch.
