Hereford defend making Edgar Street cashless as hardly anyone uses it

The ticket office will be among the places affected by the decision to make Edgar Street cashless

Hereford's chairman and general manager have defended the move to make Edgar Street cashless, and revealed only a tiny amount of cash is actually spent at the ground on a matchday.

On a matchday, general manager Jamie Griffiths said only 4 per cent of transactions were cash, so chair Chris Ammonds said the decision "made sense". It means the club shop, matchday bars and ticket office will no longer accept cash.

In one of their regular 'chats' on the club's YouTube channel, the pair confirmed it would not affect the supporters' trust's 50/50, and any decision to make the food kiosk's cashless would be a decision for the operator as these are contracted out by the club.

They said it would make the lives of staff easier and save time.

Ammonds said: "I firmly believe it's the right decision on behalf of the club and the vast majority of places you go now are becoming cashless. It's important that we try and mirror that and try and be as professional as possible."

Saying he knows there was frustration and people are resistant to change, he added: "We're not always going to make decisions that are popular but if we believe and firmly believe they're the right decision for the club, we've got to be strong enough to make them.

"This is one I think that is the right decision for the club moving forward.

"Apologies to those people who are inconvenienced by the decision but hopefully it'll turn out to be the right one."
