Former Hereford United boss with a sharp eye lands new job

Martin Foyle, who was once a familiar face in the dugouts at Edgar Street, has moved to Carlisle United

Former Hereford United manager Martin Foyle has joined relegated Carlisle United as their head of recruitment.

With preparations underway for the club's upcoming National League campaign after back-to-back relegations saw them drop out of the Football League, Foyle will bring significant experience to Brunton Park.

Having previously managed more than 400 games for York City, Port Vale and Hereford, he has also held recruitment roles at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, as well as at Motherwell, Morecambe, and Northampton Town.

While at Hereford, appointed in 2012 after the Bulls plunged back into non-league, he brought in players such as defenders Luke Graham and Andy Gallinagh, goalkeeper James Bittner and forwards Marlon Jackson, Marley Watkins and Ryan Bowman.

He was also at the helm for Hereford's memorable 3-1 FA Cup win over Graham Turner's Shrewsbury Town.

The 62-year-old's arrival follows a series of key appointments at the club, including Marc Tierney as head of football operations, Mark Hughes continuing as manager, and Paul Hart joining the board in an advisory role.

"Martin has a strong history of finding players who consistently exceed expectations," said club chairman Tom Piatak.

"His depth of experience, network of contacts, and sharp eye for talent will play an essential role as we rebuild the squad with clear ambition."

With Carlisle returning to the National League for the first time in two decades, the addition is part of a broader restructuring effort prompted by a thorough post-season review.

Piatak added: "We’re delighted to welcome someone who can spot value in the market and contribute to building a successful team."

The club’s internal review highlighted underwhelming recruitment during the last three transfer windows. In response, sporting director Rob Clarkson has departed, while Tierney has transitioned from National League side Altrincham to assume his new duties.
