Herefordshire Council has earned more than £160,000 from phone companies with masts on top of Edgar Street's floodlights.
The Blackfriars End floodlights both have masts on top and since Hereford United went bust in 2014, Herefordshire Council said it has earned £162,516 from telecommunications companies with equipment on the floodlight pylons at Edgar Street Athletic Ground.
The figures were revealed in a freedom of information request to the council and showed £8,000 a year was earned in 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19 before a jump to £58,801 in 2019/20. That figure was so high as it includes rent backdated to 2013/14, the council said, where the figure was originally nil.
In the last four full tax years, £17,543 has been generated for the council and £9,543 so far in 2024/25.
The pylons' days are numbered though as the club has applied to Herefordshire Council to replace them with shorter, 21-metre LED floodlights.
They will be more efficient and spill less light.
Bulls News also understands Herefordshire Council will dismantle all four old pylons and not the club.
While the Blackfriars End demolition has started, the floodlights are staying put for now and won't need to be taken down for the new ones to be erected. The new ones could be up and running before the new year.
The council has also served a statutory 18-month notice to the mast companies and discussions will be held to try and find suitable alternative locations.
The condemned Blackfriars End has not been leased to the club since it reformed. The club has been able to access things like the pitch sprinkler system, as the water tanks used to be behind the stand, and to use it temporarily to offer to visiting fans better facilities.
