Chester to cut squad size as they can't have everything

Chester keeper Wyll Stanway has left the club
Chester's manager has admitted the club will have a smaller squad this coming season so they can get the most out of their budget.

In a lengthy update to supporters, Blues boss Calum McIntyre said it was "an immensely busy time of year" and "there is so much to be excited about for the season ahead"

He said season tickets were "flying out", with 1,400 sold at early bird prices, the boost the budget campaign was "reflecting the incredible commitment of our supporters" and work is well underway on a football front.

He said he was looking to build a squad capable of delivering the club's aims but plans had suffered a setback as keeper Wyll Stanway has joined EFL Barrow.

"It is quite right that his performances have been recognised and he has been given a terrific opportunity to progress into full-time football at an EFL club," 30-year-old McIntyre said.

"An important part of our footballing model needs to be our ability to develop talent and move them on for transfer fees to allow us to grow our own resources.

"The deal we have done for Wyll is a really good one and I am hopeful that we can use the fee we have received to improve the wider group. Equally, there is the potential for further financial rewards in the future."

After speaking about the promising signing of hard-working, physical and athletic defensive midfielder Jack Bainbridge, who spent four years at Southport, he outlined how he was looking for experience, physicality and goals in his signings.

But that comes at a cost, McIntyre admitted, with the fan-owned club previously saying it was open to investment.

"Without sounding daft, the nature of needing to make some changes means that you have to make changes to allow you to do just that.

"We made decisions at the end of the season that allow us to free finance up to invest in areas where we needed to strengthen the group overall. In the same way, with a smaller squad, we needed to ensure we had players consistently available within those numbers.

"The playing budget needs to be sliced up to allow us to get exactly what we need. We can’t have everything and prioritising is really important for us.

"We are going to work with a smaller squad to allow us to get the most we can for our money. This means we are making recruitment decisions based around players’ availability and this also played a big part in some [of] our retention decisions. With that in mind, we are really clear around our targets.

"It isn’t a blank canvas, it isn’t a reset and it isn’t a total restructure. We need to improve in key areas and we need to complement what we already have at the club."

He said the focus is securing the right players at the right time and isn’t about chasing attention by announcing a flurry of signings.

"We have what we have to spend and we can only operate within that budget," he said.

"We can’t spend what others in the division can but we can offer the opportunity to play at a massive football club in a really positive performance environment in front of some of the best supporters around. That is what sets us apart."

A Tribute To Ralph Oliver

Club Historian Ron Parrott has brought us the sad news of the passing of ex-Hereford United player Ralph Oliver. He arrived in Hereford as part of Joe Wade’s rebuilding of the club in 1959 and to his credit, he served the club and the local community in many capacities and remained in the Hereford area until his final days, when he passed away peacefully, aged 90.  Ron’s pen-pic for Ralph that describes his career in detail is also reproduced below:-

Appearances: 156 (156+0 sub.) Goals: 2

Seasons played: 1959/60 to 1963/64

Born Tredegar 30th March 1934, died Hereford 10th May 2024

Ralph was offered trials with Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 1955 and impressed sufficiently to be offered a professional contract in August 1955. He made his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw at Brentford in mid-March 1956 and went on to record a total of seven first-team games for the Shrews before being released in May 1959.

Ralph was then signed by Hereford United's player-manager Joe Wade to add some experience to his midfield. Ralph was a stylish wing-half who read a game remarkably well and always seemed to time his tackles to perfection. Ralph served the club for five years and went on to record 156 first-team appearances.

After leaving Edgar Street, Ralph went on to manage Abergavenny Thursdays  before returning to Hereford and managing Hereford League side Hinton. Ralph also worked for local company Painter Bros. but before retirement, Ralph also spent a couple of seasons with Llandrindod Wells as their player-manager in the Mid-Wales League.

News Round Up

Former Hereford keeper Brandon Hall has signed an extension to his contract with AFC Telford. He kept 17 clean sheets last season.

It's the last day for Hereford supporters to purchase 'early bird season tickets'. Over 1100 have been sold as at midday today.

Old Programmes – Hereford Utd v Gillingham – Fourth Division – Saturday 16/9/72

A crowd of 6796 watch Hereford settle for their second consecutive goalless draw in the league at Edgar Street.

On the Pitch: Colin Addison reflects on the recent 4-1 defeat at Lincoln and highlights the different gravy that Division 4 is to the previous season's Southern League campaign. Lessons that United would most definitely go on to learn.

Off the Pitch: Fundraising is booming with a Grandstand fund reaching an impressive £6000 (given the average house price in 1972 was circa £4000). The Supporters’ Club Jottings features a rare moment in football stadium development - plans that would come to fruition. There is talk of a new supporters’ club and 400 seat extension to the main stand. These would go on to become Block D, the Starlite Rooms, 15 years of plywood curtains, before Addisons etc. literally rose from the ashes. The programme also promotes new monthly magazine Hereford Bull.

In the Opposition: Former Gillingham apprentice David Peach would turn out 187 times for the Gills, a period that would see him make the 1973-74 PFA Fourth Division Team of the Year and attract the attention of Southampton boss Lawrie McMenemy. Southampton secured his services for a £50,000 fee in January 1974. Peach would go on to gain a FA Cup Winners Medal in 1976 before getting into the Division Two PFA team the following year. After over two hundred games and a League Cup runner up medal in 1979 he moved on to Swindon for a record £150k in March 1980 before finishing his senior career at Leyton Orient in 1983 aged 32. Two other notable achievements were becoming the first ever player to do the on pitch 92 towards the end of his career and if my maths/google are correct he also became an England U21 player at the age of 26.

In the News: 18th September sees thousands of Ugandan Asians arrive in the UK after being deported by Idi Amin.

In the Charts: Slade remained at No.1 with Mama Weer All Crazee Now

On TV: On 17th September The Adventures of Black Beauty are broadcast for the first time on ITV.

Plan to tear down iconic Edgar Street floodlights unveiled

Plans have been unveiled to tear down Edgar Street's floodlight pylons and replace them with more up-to-date versions.

The iconic towers which stand tall in each corner of the ground will eventually be replaced, if Herefordshire Council grants planning permission.

Stadium director Darren Ball has applied to the council for planning permission to replace the towers with four columns of LED lighting.

Documents submitted to council planners said there are currently four large pylons that hold the current outdated floodlights.

These will be replaced with modern single-column poles that will have the most up-to-date LED lights fitted.

The poles will be placed in four corners of the ground, each pole diameter is 0.762 meters. Each pole will stand 21 metres in height. According to planning documents for a previous scheme in 2010, the existing floodlights are at least 30m high. Club historian Ron Parrott previously said the current pylons were installed in 1968.

The plans, which have been drawn up to suit the Premier League Stadium Fund, also said, experienced firm Musco Lighting Europe Ltd said its systems can cut operating costs by around 50 per cent, eliminates all maintenance for 10 years, and guarantees the actual performance of the system for 10 years – all covered by a comprehensive 10-year warranty.

Musco has helped draw up the plans and said each column will have four lights on it and are "custom-designed LED luminaires with internal optics and external visors, proper column height and locations" which will control where the light goes and avoid unwanted spill and glare affecting nearby homes.

Comments on application 241159 can be made until June 27, with planners setting July 19 as a target date for a decision.

News round up

Former Hereford defender Kennedy Digie will be playing National League football again after signing for Tamworth. The National League North champions said they were delighted to have signed 27-year-old, 6ft 3in central defender from play-off-qualifying Alfreton Town.

Described as 'big and powerful' by the Reds, Digie left Hereford to join National League Altrincham before joining Gloucester and Alfreton. He had been offered a new deal by Alfreton but now joins fellow former Bulls Jordan Cullinane-Liburd, Kyle Finn and Jamie Willets at the National League North champions.

Tim Flowers, who had a short spell as manager at Gloucester City with Yan Klukowski as his assistant last season, has been named as Redditch United's new boss. The former England goalkeeper, 57, should bring stability to the step three club, chairman David Faulkner said.

Hereford supporters are reminded that sales of early bird season tickets finish late on Friday.

Pond Returns To Chasetown

Curtis Pond has returned to Chasetown after leaving Hereford.

Pond was offered a new deal by manager Paul Caddis.

Mark Swann, Chasetown FC Gaffer, said “As soon as we knew that Pondy wouldn’t be staying at Hereford we were keen to talk to him.

He made it clear that we were his preferred club and I am happy that we have managed to secure his services once again.

Not only is he a top goalkeeper but he is also a big character within the dressing room”.

Hereford sign Sporting Khalsa winger

Hereford have signed winger Chay Tilt from Sporting Khalsa.

The Willenhall club, who the Bulls faced in the Midland Football League, are now in step four's Northern Premier League Midland Division.

The club have described him as a creative and clinical winger who has previously played for West Bromwich Albion, Queen’s Park Rangers, Stourbridge, Tamworth, Redditch, Hednesford and Macclesfield Town.

Manager Paul Caddis has said 26-year-old Tilt is a player who is "really exciting on the eye" and hopes he will start enjoying football again while at Edgar Street.

He can also play in central midfield.

He told the official website: "Sometimes in life people need opportunities and we feel Chay is at that stage of his career now. He has really exciting attributes and I know he has a hunger and desire to get his career back on track."

Read more from the club here.

Spending the entirety of his youth career at West Bromwich Albion, Tilt went on to sign first-year professional terms at The Hawthorns before moving south to join Queens Park Rangers.

Having been released from Loftus Road in the summer of 2019, Chay spent the 2019/20 campaign with step three side Stourbridge. He made 25 starts for The Glassboys - scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in the process.

When he signed for Macclesfield in September 2020, it was reported his impressive displays the previous season had caught the eye of several EFL clubs - which led to a trial at Sky Bet League One side Shrewsbury Town.

His time at Moss Rose was short-lived, rejoining Stourbridge after a brief spell at Tamworth.

Pre-Season Friendly At Stourbridge

Hereford have announced another pre-season friendly.

They will travel to Stourbridge on Thursday July 25th.

Kick-off at the War Memorial Athletic Ground is set for 7.45pm.

Harry White
Former Hereford striker Harry White has signed for step four side Evesham United. The 29-year-old Birmingham-born forward joined Hereford after the departure of John Mills when the Bulls were promoted to the National League.

He made 17 appearances before being released by mutual consent six months after joining. He then had a short spell at Redditch United before Australia beckoned. He then had further spells at Stratford Town, Halesowen Town and Racing Club Warwick.

Another former Bull also looks set to have a new club. Sam Clucas has been linked with a move to League Two Chesterfield. Winger Clucas, who has previously played for Chesterfield, was released by Rotherham United and the Spirites let their ambition know from early on that he was one of their top targets.

He left the Bulls, then in the Conference, in 2013, when newly-promoted League Two side Mansfield Town snapped him up for £20,000 plus a 15 per cent sell-on clause. Since then he has had spells with Chesterfield, Hull City and Swansea, before joining Stoke City where he struggled with injury.

2023 Hollywood film features actor portrayal of former United player

Hollywood film Gran Turismo, which came out last year and stars Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), David Harbour (Stranger Things) and a young British actor called Archie Madekwe, features an actor portrayal of a former Hereford United player.

One eagle-eyed Bulls fan spotted the connection while watching the film on a flight.

The BN reader who thought it might be of interest to HUFC fans of a certain age said:

Madekwe plays Jann Mardenborough, a teenager from Cardiff who won a professional racing contract with Nissan after being crowned the best 'Gran Turismo' video game player in the world. He went on to race and finish on the podium in Le Mans as a result.

I watched the film on a flight and throughout it, there are appearances from Jann's dad, who was a former Cardiff City player. His dad is sceptical about his chances of making any future from video gaming, and wants him to follow his own path into football, which Jann's brother has done as a member of Cardiff's youth setup.  The dad is never named during the film so I had to wait until the end credits to confirm my suspicions, and then until I came off airplane mode to Google it and know for sure!

Jann's dad is Steve Mardenborough, who played 27 games for HUFC in the 1988-89 season. I had a vague memory of him signing from Cardiff and thought that there can't be that many ex-footballers with the name Mardenborough knocking about!

So there you go... a bit niche and obscure but might be of interest to anyone who grew up watching the Ian Bowyer era! And there also can't be many HUFC players who have been portrayed in a Hollywood film?!

News Round Up

Kings Lynn have signed former Ipswich youngster Ross Crane.

Alfreton have signed former Southport defender Adam Anson.

Lads Club have tweeted that they will host a pre-season friendly against Hereford on Saturday July 6th.

Another pre-season fixture announced

Stuart Fleetwood, centre
Another of Hereford's pre-season fixtures has been announced.

Paul Caddis's side will travel to Swindon Supermarine on Tuesday 16th July with kick off at 7.45pm.

The side finished 16th in the Southern Premier League South under the guidance of former Hereford striker Stuart Fleetwood.

When Stuart Fleetwood took over at the club, they had just one point from 10 games - but he was able to turn things around and guide them to safety.

The 38-year-old had two spells at Hereford United and made just shy of 100 appearances in the 2006/07 and 2011/12 seasons - playing with Andy Williams during the first stint.

Fleetwood won't be the only familiar face at the Webbswood Stadium though as he has just re-signed Jamie Edge. The midfielder played for the Bulls under Peter Beadle and next season will have a player-coach role.

Fellow midfielder Joe Tumelty also turned out for the club last season.

Blackfriars End demolition a step closer as contractor appointed

The Blackfriars End at Edgar Street
The demolition of the Blackfriars End at Edgar Street is now a step closer after Herefordshire Council appointed a contractor to carry out the work.

Pennys Group Ltd, based in Ston Easton near Bath, will demolish the stand this summer, with work initially scheduled to begin on June 3 and be finished by August 30.

The firm, which has been in business for more than six decades, will be demolishing the stand, groundsman's store, toilets, former United in the Community building, part of the entrance stalls (existing brick boundary wall to be maintained) and the former public toilets.

As part of the decision, the council has agreed to spend £92,752.10 for the works, which includes a contingency of up to £12,098.10

There is also £8,065.40 set to be spent on internal and external professional fees.

A report, signed off by Sarah Jowett, the council's strategic assets delivery director, said if the work is not carried out, the stand - which is not included in the lease to the football club - is at risk of needing improvements, potentially costing the council extra money. It said there is also a health and safety risk associated with not carrying out the demolition.

There is also a risk that once on site, further works are found to be needed so the contingency money is there to cover "unforeseen elements".

The iconic floodlight pylons will be retained for the time being and separate documents said the stand and buildings are not safe to use and beyond economical repair. It is part of the council's masterplan to redevelop the site, incorporating accommodation for students, as well as a stand for the club's 'basic needs'.

As part of the works, asbestos will need to be removed by a licensed contractor and the site cleared and levelled, including the toilets at the rear of the terrace used by Blocks C and D.

The existing boundary wall and access gates off Blackfriars Street and Edgar Street will remain, and the council hopes to recycle more than 95 per cent of all waste.

temporary hoarding will be built to segregate from the rest of the football ground, but existing emergency vehicle access to the football pitch from Blackfriars Street will be maintained. The water tanks used for the pitch's sprinkler system should also be retained.

Pictures submitted with the application also show the extent of the cracked terrace of the Blackfriars End, as well as various walls around the stand. Areas are also overgrown, with other walls leaning.

Old Programmes – Hereford Utd v Workington Town – Fourth Division – Saturday 2/9/72

Hereford’s second ever league game at Edgar Street sees 7581 people witnessing a 0-0 draw.  The programme proudly features the recent historic game against Reading together with several items about reserve team games at Edgar Street. A recent reserve team crowd of over 1800 resulting in the club considering printing reserve team programmes. It is also noted that it would have been the second highest gate of the corresponding Southern League fixtures that Hereford had been competing in the season before.

As an aside, if you don’t already own a copy of Ron Parrott’s Hereford United - The League Era – A Complete Record, that is something that needs correcting. It can be found online and is a compulsory partner when considering any journey down HUFC memory lane.

In the charts: No.1 was Rod Stewart with You Wear it Well.

In the news: 1st September 1972 – Raising of school leaving age in England and Wales from fifteen to sixteen for pupils leaving school at the end of the academic year begins. Many temporary new buildings are erected in secondary modern and comprehensive schools to accommodate the older pupils.

Fan Groups Ask For Committment To Football Governance Bill

This from the FSA:

Supporter groups from across the country have co-signed a letter to the major party leaders this week calling on them to include a committment to the Football Governance Bill in their pre-election manifestos.

Following the announcement this week that the much-anticipated general election will be held in July we sadly learned that the Football Governance Bill would not be among the pieces of legislation included in the end-of-Parliament "wash up" convention.

Over the last 24 hours more than 170 supporter groups (and some community-owned clubs) have co-signed a letter to the major parties urging them to include this bill in their manifesto and, should they win the election, to work with the FSA in a new Parliament to reintroduce legislation in the first King’s Speech.

Penned by FSA chief executive Kevin Miles and chair of the Fan-led Review Tracey Crouch the letter says: "This legislation contained key principles which would block future breakaway leagues, improve financial sustainability, protect club heritage and give fans a greater say in how the game and the clubs they love are run.

"There was cross party support for the bill which was endorsed by football supporters up and down the land – including the FSA’s own member groups whose influence greatly helped to shape the legislation."

Old HUFC Programmes

Welcome to a new series that starting with their maiden Football League season in 1972-73 will feature many of the HUFC matchday programmes. To kick things off however we delve into the season before and a certain FA Cup match against Newcastle United. This match is credited more than any other with getting Hereford United into the football league, however as this series will demonstrate that is a little harsh on everything else that was happening during what was surely the most exciting and dynamic period in Hereford football history. United were a club that had been on the march for several years with 5000+ league gates at Edgar Street the norm combined with so many developments happening off the pitch.
