Football Governance Bill Passes Second Reading

The Football Governance Bill passed its second reading this week.

This from the FSA:

It was another important week in the history of football governance in this country - as long-awaited reforms, including a new regulator for football - came a step closer.

The Football Governance Bill passed its second reading in Parliament as MPs from across the House praised the work of the FSA which had gone into campaign for an independent regulator.

Following that second reading, the Bill will now proceed to the committee stage where it will be examined in detail by MPs before moving up to the House of Lords. DCMS minister Lucy Frazer said football's current regime of self-regulation had failed and "something had to change."

"Too many fans have been taken for granted, too many fans have seen their team’s owner change club badges and colours without any fan input, or seen their club sell their stadium and upsticks or try to join closed shop breakaway leagues," she said.

“There have been 64 instances of clubs falling into administration since the Premier League was founded in 1992. Clearly, not all clubs are feeling the benefits of English football’s global success and something has to change.”

In the coming weeks the FSA will publish a list of proposed amendments, alongside some simple actions that supporters can take to ask that their MP supports these amendments. Keep an eye out.
