A cursory look at the Bulls' recent performances show four losses in four games, failing to score in three of them.
But Hereford did put in an improved performance today after Monday's 4-0 thrashing at Tamworth. Without strikers Andy Williams and Jason Cowley, who between them are paid more than 40 per cent of the budget, according to boss Paul Caddis, so it's always going to be tough.
The plan was also never likely to be Adam Rooney playing every match. Paul Downing in central defence is a vast improvement based on today, and a tenacious, ball-winning midfielder with the experience to keep things organised will help.
Rooney does a good job, he's a leader on the pitch, but he or today's strike partner Tom Hewlett won't score if they have no service. Long balls with towering defenders like Jamie Willets and Jordan Cullinane-Liburd at Tamworth is never the best tactic either.
As is often the case, Southport had one chance and took it, no doubt buoyed on by their new manager. In short, the Bulls failed to capitalise when they were on top and had some decisions go against them.
Improvements are needed though though the Whites' chairman is asking supporters to give it time, with some boos ringing around Edgar Street at full time.
Stig tweeted: "I understand the frustration and concern. As supporters, we all want Hereford FC to win every week.
"This was never going to be a smooth ride though (has it ever been at Edgar Street?!) and it was always likely to take some time.
"I never thought anything else."
It is still an entirely new squad, with a rookie manager, so it was always unlikely to be a plain-sailing start despite the pre-season optimism at Edgar Street. Most players were also stepping up to National League North for the first time.
Stig finished the tweet with two hashtags, #keepthefaith and #COYW.
He then followed up by praising the 2, at Edgar Street today.
"Thanks for the support today too," he said.
"Another excellent attendance which, on many other days, would have seen us win. That’s football though, sadly."
In reply, there was a reasonable tweet from Steve Alexander saying: "The performance was fine apart from the final third. Add Williams and Cowley to that squad and I'm sure we win the game.
"Take a one eyed ref out of the equation and we still get something out of it!"
Ian67 had a similar view, saying: "We have more than our quota of over reacting drama queens!
"If we can hang in there until we get Willo and Cowley back we’ll be fine.
"An experienced midfield general wouldn’t go amiss though!"
On the other hand, Lugger wasn't impressed, saying: "Keep the faith watching that garbage pinging pointless long balls to Rooney I'm afraid there's a few players just not good enough and the need for a clear ball winner in cm is clear to see the performance was ok today but still lost and really not testing the keeper."
