Hereford's Victory Marred By Injury To Willo

Hereford may have won this afternoon's pre-season friendly but the game was marred by a knee injury to striker Andy Williams.

In truth the opposition, West Brom Under 21's, didn't give Paul Caddin's squad too much of a challenge with keeper Curtis Pond having little to do.

A thunderstorm half an hour or so before kick-off cleared and the Edgar Street pitch looked as good as ever.

Latest Signing - Kyle Howkins

Hereford's starting eleven: Pond, Skinner, Howkins, Cameron, Cranston, Mendes, Livingstone, Babos, Cowley, Teixeira, Williams.

Missing was Stanley Anaeboram who was unfit.

Hereford kicked-off up the slope.

First chance of the game went to Cowley who struck from distance.

West Brom then had a free kick which went well wide.

Hereford's first real chance came on 17 minutes. A scramble in the area. Eventually the ball came to Cowley who struck it but somehow the West Brom keeper put it out for a corner.

The first goal of the game came on 25 minutes. A West Brom defender failed to clear a corner and the ball hit another West Brom player and was deflected into the box.

Most of the action was in the West Brom half. Andy Williams tried his luck but it sailed over.

Then he was knocked to the ground but no foul was given.

A good cross from Adam Livington came to nothing.

Shortly afterwards Hereford were awarded a free kick when Cowley had his shirt pulled.

Jordan Cranson took the corner and the ball bounced about in the area but to no avail.

Then just before the half time whistle a West Brom cross cum shot went close to the upright.

Paul Caddis didn't make any changes at half time.

Five minutes into the second period and Andy Williams needed attention to what looks like a knee injury.

He had to be helped off the pitch and was replaced by Adam Rooney.

Five minutes later Caddis took off Cowley who was replaced by a trialist who also came on at Pegasus last Saturday.

On 58 minutes Hereford were awarded a penalty when Rooney was pulled down in the box. There was no argument who was going to take it.

The keeper tried to block it but the shot was to his left. 2-0 to the Bulls.

Two more substitutions with Mark Derricott and Ollie Southern coming on.

Lassana Mendes got himself in a good position but couldn't get a shot away.

Four trialists came on for the last ten minutes. Hereford looked a bit ragged for a while but West Brom were unable to take advantage.

Near the end a chance for Rooney which went wide.

And from much the same position one for trialist no 25.

And then no 23 might has done better.

Full time: Hereford 2 West Brom 0

Scorers: Own Goal, Rooney (pen)

Attendance 1038

In the past West Brom teams have come to Edgar Street in pre-season and given the Bulls a fair test. This didn't happen today.

Was it because the West Brom side wasn't as good as usual or was it because Paul Caddis's signings are beginning to gel and show what they are capable of. Or perhaps both.

It's Nuneaton away on Tuesday, then Bromsgrove away on Saturday.

But the real test will be when Swindon visit Edgar Street on Tuesday July 18th.
