Hereford's Recent Performances Merit More Points?

Yesterday afternoon BBC H&W's Keith Hall was interviewed on their sports programme after Hereford's game at Spennymoor was called off.

The interview turned to recent performances which, perhaps, Hereford should have taken some or more points from.

"Certainly the last three," said Hall.

"Darlington at home was a more up-lifted performance.

"Seems they played very well and took the lead at Kings Lynn but couldn't hold on to. That's no disgrace considering where Lynn are in the table.

"And they really should have got three points against Chorley, they didn't get the second goal. If they had done I think they would have got a couple more in the second half.

"But that's where they are.

"They are certainly turning it around a little bit. The numbers, as Josh Gowling calls it. are coming back from players who have been out injuried coming back into the frame.

Marco Rus

"He's thrown a couple of youngsters in there on a regular basis, obviously Marco Rus from Coventry has been an outstanding signing by the looks of it.

Jack Holmes

"Jack Holmes seemed to have come to form as well.

"So it's looking much more promising than it was."

Next they spoke about Gowling.

"He's been under pressure, six defeats in the last eight including the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, only five scored in the last eight games.

"The Heybridge Swifts performance away in the FA Trophy was an absolute shocker, really abysmal performance down there to exit at the first attempt 3-0.

"And the players that were being brought in - whether this was a financial issue, restriction or whatever - free agents and trialists are not going to make you competitive.

"That's what I was trying to get through to Gowling, not that he needed me telling him.

"You've got to get players in - say you need a couple of full backs for example - they've got to be of decent quality or you will not compete in the National League North because every team can find a way to beat you. If you've got a weakness most teams will exploit it."

Last week James Caton and James Melhado left Edgar Street.

James Melhado

"Shame about Melhado, he's linked up really well down the right flank, gets forward a lot, got an assist in recently.

Mark Derricott

"Mark Derricott has gone on loan to Hednesford with Steve Burr so he will get match time there.

"If you've got to get players in of the quality then you probably need to look higher than your existing pool of youngsters because to give them responsibility at this stage of the season given the run of results they need to start picking up some victories."

Marco Rus looks a good addition to the squad.

"Yes, very very lively at Kings Lynn by all accounts. I wasn't there so my first look in depth live was against Chorley and he was outstanding, pulling the strings, play-maker in midfield, exactly the sort of player Hereford need alongside Jack Holmes.

"Both of those two were outstanding on the evening and should have scored more goals.

"The critics will look at the results and the lack of goals scored, five in the last eight, but it was a much more promising performance and something especially at home that you need to do to maintain attendances. You need to entertain at Edgar Street.

"Gowling tends to rely a lot on wing backs and if they are both out injuried, which has been the case, the replacements that come in are still critical because the system he likes to play 4 2 3 1 encourages the wing backs to get forward in support of the two wide midfield players.

"If they are not there or haven't got the capabilities to get forward as quickly as he would like the system seems to break down a little bit."

Going back to Marco Rus.

"He wants first team football, this is his first opportunity at senior level, he's played a lot of under 23 football and under 21 football.

"I just feel that the more games (players like Rus) they get at a senior level it's better for them in the long run rather than go back and then not be able to perform on a regular basis. It's better for them to get 12/15 games under their belt then they can go back and really compete for a first team slot."
