It's easy to blame Spennymoor for the late postponement of today's game against Hereford. In truth they did their best to beat the elements with frost covers and heaters. And conditions can change from one hour to the next if the sun is strong enough.
But whatever the rights and wrongs, Hereford will have to pick up the tab for the team coach which according to BBC's Keith Hall had reached Sheffield by the time the game was called off.
The cost of the coach has to be around £1000. And there will be other costs on top such as travelling expenses of some players to meet the coach.
Some supporters had travelled towards Spennymoor yesterday and will no doubt be counting the cost this morning.
Is it time to introduce a better way of calling off games especially those that involve a long journey for the visiting team?
One solution might simply be that the visiting team says the latest time it needs to leave and if there is any doubt that the game may not go ahead then they don't set out.
Admittedly that idea will not cover all situations such as a sudden downpour close to kick-off which renders a pitch unplayable.
But with the cost of travel as it is these days calling a game off when the visitors are half way to the ground should be avoided if at all possible.
