Remembering 1972 This Weekend

This weekend is the 50th anniversary of that epic FA Cup tie between Hereford United and Newcastle United and there are a number of events taking place to remember the game that everyone continues to associate with the competition.

A number of the players and others involved with that game will be in Hereford for the anniversary.

Events start at the Leominster Sports and Social Club on Friday evening. Brian Viner will be in conversation with most of the surviving members of the Hereford team and trainer Peter Isaac, as well as Newcastle’s skipper, 76-year-old Bobby Moncur. There will be a question and answer session as well.

On Saturday during the half time break in the game against Boston, interestingly credit to Boston for swapping the date of the fixture to allow for Hereford to hold a home game on this date, Matt Healey will be on the pitch talking to some of the players who took part in the game.

Immediately after the game Hereford FC will present extended highlights of the game with former players in attendance. This will take place in Hereford Lounge with a free pint of Giant Killers Pale Ale from Wye Valley Brewery, entry in a free prize draw and the chance to view a gallery of prints from the time drawn by caricature artist, Peter Manders.

And in the evening a celebration dinner for about 80 in the Green Dragon Hotel.

It's not only events but publications as well. Two publications in particular will surely be compulsory additions to any Hereford supporters library.

Firstly Talking Bull.

TB is very proud to uniquely re-live the greatest period in the long history of Edgar Street clubs. This is our most ambitious project to date, and incorporates 68-pages of content, and required several hundred hours of effort. TB133 owes much to the remarkable Hereford fan Peter James who had a vision for this Giant-Killers edition.

Through his persistence, diligence and hard work, he metaphorically dropped a ton of contributions into the disbelieving laps of our editorial and design teams here at Talking Bull.

Ronnie Radford. John Motson and so on are constantly tapped up for their recollections, over the decades, supporters are rarely featured. We are putting that right.

It will be on sale hopefully from two locations outside the ground, near the club shop and near the ticket office. If you can't make the game check out talkingbull.org for other ways to get your hands on a copy such as mail order or digitally.

Secondly the Match Programme

The club have produced a Collectors’ Edition Matchday Programme.

Consisting of 80 pages, it celebrates and showcases this most significant of days in our history with detailed accounts from people who were there, be in on the pitch or on the sidelines.

We hear from the likes of player-manager, Colin Addison, winning goalscorer, Ricky George, the no-nonsense but extremely talented Ken Mallender, the then rookie commentator, John Motson, David Icke, Richard Prime and Richard Tomkins as well as delving into Ron Parrott’s fantastic archive of photographs.

On top of all the above Catcher Media have information, pictures and video. Go to: herefordshirelifethroughalens.org.uk/hereford-unite
