In just over two weeks time it will be fifty years since Hereford defeated Newcastle in the FA Cup.
Recently there has been a call for supporters who were at FA Cup games that season to send their memories to Peter James who helping to edit a special issue of Talking Bull.
Here's one story from Robert Powell
My story on Hereford United 2 Newcastle United 1
When Hereford drew Newcastle in the cup in 1972, I was in my final year of my degree at Liverpool University but was still an ardent Hereford fan – my first game was the match against Sheffield Wednesday in the cup in 1958.
I was up in Liverpool so unable to queue for tickets but decided to write to the Chairman Frank Miles to see if he could help me. During Hereford’s attempt to be promoted to the football league the previous year, an article appeared in the Daily Mirror arguing that Wigan Athletic deserved to be promoted to the football league. This incensed me so I wrote to the Mirror forcibly putting Hereford’s case. The Mirror printed it!
I explained this to Frank Miles in my letter and followed it up with a phone call. He took my call and said ‘I wondered why someone in Liverpool was putting Hereford’s case – come to the club and I will put aside a ticket for you’.
I travelled down from Liverpool three times for the game only to find on arrival that the first two dates had been postponed because of snow or rain (can’t remember which).
The rest is history. I was also lucky enough to get a ticket for the reunion dinner in February 2012 and at this I was able at long last to meet my heroes.
The first is me with Ronnie and Ricky, the second with Dudley Tyler. I also have a video of Ronnie and Ricky hugging each other for over a minute, both in tears. I will treasure that forever.
Robert Powell - Most of my family still live in Hereford but I am a Stafford Bull.
