I Just Want To Play Football Said Dawson

Stephen Dawson spoke to the media after last night's game at Southport which the home team won 3-2.

It was Dawson's first game for Hereford. His influence in mid-field was very noticable and many felt he was Hereford's man of the match.

"I felt the first 20/25 minutes we didn't start the game particularily well," said Dawson.

"As the game went on we grew into the game, we got the goal.

"Second half we controlled the game.

"If the penalty goes in (Styche missed to convert) it's a different story, game of chances.

"The goals we conceeded are most disappointing. We need to be better as a group and I'm sure we will. They are young, they are learning. Come Saturday hopefully get a positive result because we need it."

Dawson was pleased to be playing again.

"I just want to thank the club, it's my first competitive game in ten months so for me just to get back out there was an honour.

"I just want to play football now, I just want to get playing.

"I felt I should have done better with the touch leading to the penalty, I should have taken the chance myself.

"We've got to learn from it, we've got to pick ourselves up, it's a big game now Saturday.

"I just want to thank the club for having me here, I want to thank the manager, the lads as well have been great.

"I love playing football and hopefully I'll get fitter and stronger and sharper as well."

Dawson looks like an leader.

"It's something I've done my whole career, I like to lead by example, I never give up on anything, give 110%, that's the way I am.

"I'm not a quiet lad, I like to set standards myself.

"I just disappointed that we did lose the game but I did feel for large parts other than the first twenty minutes and the goals we conceeded we were in control.

"But that's football, it's a games of chances so we dust ourselves down and prepare for Saturday."

Did Dawson notice much difference from the Football League?

"It's a good standard. I've no problem dropping down. This is a big club. I remember playing against Hereford in the League, that's how old I'm getting.

"It's a big club, great fanbase and hopefully they will be out there on Saturday.

"What's disappointing if that we've scored four goals in two away games and haven't come home with anything and that's disappointing.

"It's getting my head down, getting my fitness going, it's been a long time, my first game in ten months.

"At times I felt I could have done better out there and that the standard I set myself. Once or twice I wasn't good enough on the ball.

"I'm training at Rochdale during the week. It's probably down to them I've been able to do ninety minutes. If selected for Saturday I'm ready to go."

How did Dawson come to Hereford?

"It was through Russ (Slade) the manager.

"There was a bit of talk after I left Bury, what do I do, do I keep going?

"I just want to play.

"Russ rang me up and said listen they are a great bunch of lads, just come in and play.

"With them only training part time I still want to train full time because I still feel I've a lot to give.

"Russ has been great, he called me up, listen just come in until January, twelve, fourteen games.

"I want to play, if selected, every single one of them and want to get fitter and stronger, hopefully score a few and raise the standard."
