Captain Harvey Smith says Hereford had a woeful ten minutes in which they conceded three goals against FC United of Manchester.
He said the result and the performance are nowhere near where Hereford need to be, and Tuesday's game against Southport is another six-pointer.
Smith directed Thompson's shot into the back of his own net for the visitors' second goal, and admitted he got his positioning wrong.
“Yes it was really disappointing and I don't think the performance or the result is anywhere near where we want to be or where we should be,” said Smith.
“Obviously it’s not good enough. We all know that but we need to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down as we have got a chance to put it right on Tuesday night. Another six pointer, another important game."
Unfortunately for Smith it was his own goal that put FC United 2-0 ahead.
“I wasn’t trying to hit it into my own net obviously.
“I think in fairness I probably got my body position wrong when the ball has come in. I’ve tried to clear it but obviously it’s gone the wrong way.
“We started well, we came out of the blocks well. The first ten or fifteen I thought we were the better side. We were getting corners and looking threatening.
"Their first goal was probably against the run of play but that’s where we need the bigger players on the pitch to stand up and shut up shop and see that period out because the next 10 minutes that followed were woeful.
“The first goal was key but still I think we need to be big and bold enough to not let it have that much of an impact on us and just not let what happened happen."
There were some changes at half-time.
“We changed the shape, we went to a back four in the second half and we were marginally better but still not good enough. I still don’t think we kept possession well enough in their half and threatened them enough.
“There was a slight reaction from half time but we need to be better on Tuesday.”
What were FC United's main threats?
"I think their biggest threats were our mistakes. We put ourselves under pressure, they were not that good a side, they didn't cause us too many problems. We made them look a better side than what they are."
Hereford's next game is against Southport on Tuesday evening.
“It makes it an even bigger game on Tuesday now. We need to get three points just to get our season rolling again and get back to where we need to be.
"Before today we had a difficult run of fixtures and obviously three tough away games on the bounce and Altrincham as well.
“We feel we’ve dealt with a lot of what has been in front of us well up until today obviously. Today you put that to one side I think. Before today we were in a good place, we were feeling positive, feeling like we can compete against anyone in this league.
“After today's loss everyone is down in the changing room and fuming with what has happened. We need to stay together, rally up and go again on Tuesday and put it right.
“It is another six pointer and important game.”
