Comfortable Victory For Nervous Girls Said Russell

Hereford women’s team got their life at Edgar Street off to a good start on Sunday afternoon as they beat Areley Kings 2-0 in their first game at the stadium.

Head Coach Scott Russell felt it was a comfortable victory as substitute Roxana Dinescu and Jess Kenny and scored for the Whites.

“Always happy with three points, and always happy with a clean sheet,” Russell said.

“Obviously our first game at Edgar Street, a good result for the girls, happy for them. This pitch is always going to suit our type of play, a nice wide pitch.

“The girls were nervous, there were three or four of them that were really nervous before the game and it showed in the first half. We lacked a bit of composure and rushed things.

"We got that second goal at the death, but if we’d got that second goal earlier, I think it would’ve been a more comfortable result.

“Can’t complain, 2-0.”

The first goal came just after half time as Romanian Dinescu tapped home Jess Kenny’s cross.

Last year Dinescu was playing Champions League football in her hometown in Romania, while Ana Moreira, brother of former first team player Carlos, is also in the squad.

“Well Roxy, it’s a lovely through-ball by Jess and we’re trying to encourage our number 10 to link in between the full-back and centre-back, Roxy’s run on, the keeper’s come out, gone around and she’s slipped it in nicely,” added Russell.

“Delighted about that.”

“The first goal, it was a complete swap, Roxy played the ball over to Jess and Jess has fired it in from the edge of the area.

“I think the keeper got a touch off the bar maybe, but for me it was a comfortable result, but we could’ve played a lot better.”

Katie Wood had a good game in goal, and at only 17 Russell says that even though she’s been thrown in the deep end after the first-choice keeper broke her ankle, she’s gone well.

He said: “Katie has only just turned 17, she’s been thrusted into the team with our other keeper Sarah breaking her ankle, so she’s had a fair few games.

“But fair play, she’s had her head down and she’s done well. She’s young, she’s raw and she’s going to improve.

“Next game is Bartestree away, which we’re really looking forward to, a local derby.

“We played them in pre-season and beat them 6-1 or something, they’ve added to their team but I expect another three points next week.”
