Ray Wilkins, whose death was announced earlier this week, scored two goals for Chelsea against Hereford United.
It was in the 1976/77 season when Hereford were playing in League Division Two.
The Bulls had been promoted the previous season and were up against teams like Chelsea, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Charlton and Southampton.
Wilkins had established himself in the Chelsea team and played at Edgar Street in a 2-2 draw in November 1976. Some 12,528 filled the ground to watch the game.
On New Years Day, Hereford travelled to Chelsea but lost the game 5-1. Wilkins scored two of the goals in front of a gate of 27,720
"Pushed up into a freer role behind the strikers, his lob from outside
the area over the Hereford keeper on a terrible New Year’s Day pitch is
one of the most iconic goals of that cherished season, and indeed the
whole era."
In the same game Terry Paine, who had just received an MBE, scored Hereford's only goal.
