Report: Hereford 5 - Gosport Borough 1

A Hat-Trick For Jennison Myrie-Williams
Hereford didn't let complacency get to them ahead of the visit of Gosport Borough this afternoon, comfortably beating the league's bottom-side 5-1. Jennison Myrie-Williams faced some criticism after Tuesday's 1-0 win over Frome, but he responded by grabbing a hat-trick in this afternoon's match, with Jimmy Oates and Lance Smith also on the score sheet.

There were four changes to the side that played midweek, with Will Puddy making his debut between the sticks for Hereford. Ryan Green, Pablo Haysham and Lance Smith also returned to the starting XI.

The Bulls had two early chances in front of a vocal Meadow End, but weren't able to test the keeper. Jimmy Oates had the first, but after cutting into the box from the right and working the ball onto his left-foot, his powerful shot was blocked by Ryan Case.

Moments later Oates was involved again as he managed to win back possession, and after the ball was worked to Billy Murphy in a central position, his shot lacked any real conviction and was easily gathered by Patrick O'Flaherty.

With 12 minutes on the clock, John Mills forced a save out of the keeper after beating his man with his trademark chop. After getting around Ryan Case, Mills' shot across the face of goal was punched clear by O'Flaherty before being quickly cleared.

Will Puddy was first called into action with half an hour on the clock to deny Joseph Lea the opener. Lea was able to take advantage of Billy Murphy's error just inside his own half, before bursting towards goal, but Puddy did well to save the effort low down to his right.

Back in front of the Meadow End, Hereford took the lead two minutes later. With Myrie-Williams' shot palmed around the post, Rob Purdie was able to pick out Jimmy Oates at the far post with the resulting corner. After hitting the post, Myrie-Williams was able to tap the ball home to open the scoring.

Eight minutes from half time, John Mills could've made it two-nil from a free kick on the edge of the area. With his initial shot Mills fired straight at the five-man wall before the follow up shot was blocked by James Harper.

Going into the break Hereford had a two-goal lead thanks to captain Jimmy Oates. With a free-kick delivered into the box by Rob Purdie, Myrie-Williams found Jimmy Oates who rifled home to double the lead.

Right on the stroke of half time, Harvey Read nearly pulled a goal back, but after getting on the end of Boro's first corner of the game, his header was saved down at the near post by Will Puddy.

Pete Beadle made one change at the break with Eliot Richards coming on for Billy Murphy, who had felt his hamstring, in centre midfield.

Gosport managed to pull a goal back four minutes after the restart with a rasping shot from Rowan Vine. Patrick Suraci's cross was only cleared as far as Vine by Liburd, and the caretaker boss made no mistake as he fired diagonally across Puddy's goal.

Hereford soon restored their two goal lead though, as in the 51st minute Jennison Myrie-Williams scored his second. With Haysham providing the cross, Myrie-Williams saw his header denied by the upright, before showing fancy footwork and finding the back of the net at the second time of asking.

Myrie-Williams was quick to complete his hat-trick, doing so a minute shy of the hour mark. Jimmy Oates' late cross was met by the 29-year old who couldn't miss from point-blank range.

The goals kept coming as Lance Smith made it five with 64 minutes on the clock, moments after slicing a chance horribly wide. Cameron Pring's lofted cross-field ball was met by Lance Smith on the right-hand side of the box to force it across the line.

The Lilywhites kept up the pressure with chances from Haysham, Smith and Symons, but couldn't find goal number six. Pablo Haysham saw his shot blocked by visiting captain Edward Sanders, and from the rebounded effort Lance Smith could only find the side-netting from an acute angle.

Haysham then had another shot on goal, this time from range, but the keeper palmed the shot down straight to the feet of Symons, but he was flagged offside.

The next chance for Hereford saw Lance Smith's rising shot just beat the crossbar as he tried his luck from the left-hand side of the box, before in the 79th minute Mike Symons headed Jimmy Oates' cross wide from 12-yards.

Despite stringing together a number of accurate passes in the final ten minutes of the game, it was just the five goals for the Bulls this afternoon. The difference is class was clear right from kick off and Gosport will have to wait at least another week for their first three points since December.
