Hereford defeated Tenbury United 15-1 last night but was it a record breaking victory?
BN asked Ron Parrott, Hereford's historian.
"Yes, certainly one for the statisticians!" said Ron.
"The 15-1 now stands as our biggest ever victory in a first-team
match, beating the 11-0 against local tile-works side Thynnes Athletic
in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup in 1947/48. But even last night’s
prolific goalscoring by Page & Smith failed to come anywhere near
Charlie Thompson’s tally of eight goals in the Thynnes match!
"Also worth noting that last night’s score wasn’t quite big enough
to beat our best ever result, 15-0 against a Gibraltar FA XI in a
pre-season friendly in 1974/75, but this didn’t qualify as a first-team
fixture, therefore doesn’t count."
BN also asked Ron about Hereford managers letting their son(s) play for the club.
"This is an interesting question and the answer is actually four and a half times!
1. Peter & Josh Beadle of course
2. Graham & Mark Turner (6 x Football League appearances in 1996/97)
3. Ian & Gary Bowyer (18 first-team appearances in 1989/90)
4. Bob & Richard Dennison (2 Southern League appearances in 1967/68)
5. The “half” is because manager Bobby Gould’s son Jonathan
played 15 times for us in 2004/05 but Bobby had long since departed as
manager by then!"
