We Got The Result Although It Was Close Said Beadle

Hereford FC progressed to the next round in the HFA Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Westfields but, as manager Peter Beadle said afterwards, it wasn't easy.

"It was exactly what we expected, a tough game," said Beadle.

"I thought Westfields played superbly first half and gave us a bit of a run around but we managed to hold out until half time.

"Then we changed it around a little bit in what we asked one or two to do. Then we got the goal and the second one quite quickly after.

"Then we started to take more control of the game but they kept working at it and they scored a great goal with a decent bit of play which made it a difficult last seven or eight minutes.

"I think the real positive for me is that we've come through with nothing serious injury wise, Jamie Bird with a bit of cramp, Lance a bit of a bloody nose. Other than that just kicks and knocks.

"There were eight players out there that haven't had much game time for a considerable amount of time and they've all come through the game well.

"We've had a winger playing at full back who hasn't played there before but did a sterling job.

"A real positive night for us in that most of them have had ninety minutes apart from Lance at the end and Jamie towards the end.

"We've got the result although it was close. First half they were better than us, second we shaded it, a bit more clinical.

"All in all a good game and we've had lots of pluses out of it."

Jamie Bird appeared to score from a corner but it might have been helped by the Westfields keeper.

"I can't see from that distance, a long way away for me so you'll have to ask him that."

Lance Smith scored Hereford's second goal probably helped by a deflection.

"First half the tempo was a bit slow but maybe that was because they were a bit rusty so it took us a little while to get going but second half we started better.

"Then we got the first goal, then the second one quickly and we then got a bit more rhythem and controlled the game better.

"I'm really pleased with what they have done and the shift they've put in. Right through from Page, Williams, Preston, Bird, Purdie, Molyneux, Pablo, Lance and Simmo who has missed a few games with suspension. To come to a game like that, a local derby, and to play as well as they did I thought they did well."

Looking forward to the weekend Beadle seems unlikely to change the starting eleven.

"The ones that have been playing have been playing very well so I don't envisage having to make too many changes for the game on Saturday. We'll see how everybody is tomorrow.

"This game has come at a perfect time for us. Whilst the game wasn't a big priority it was one of then we could get all those players out on the pitch.

"Yes it meant playing a few out of position but the outcome wasn't the be all and end of it. We wanted to win and we felt who we had out there were strong enough to win and it was the case in the end."

With two away games in the next seven days Beadle might need to call on players who were involved this evening.

"We may need to call on them. What it did do was showed how fit they are.

"It's a squad and we always need a good squad. It's not just about the eleven who play every week."
