From The Archives - Weymouth In Trouble

Just like Hereford, Weymouth football club has had its financial problems. Just over ten years ago.

This from BN dated January 9th 2007:

Conference side Weymouth are in trouble. Garry Hill the manager has left and it looks as though the players are all on offer.

Persistent rumours that the South Coast side were overstretched financially now appear to be correct.

The Dorest Echo reported the news earlier this evening.

Weymouth Football Club is in crisis tonight (Tues) after the manager and players were told they would be axed to save the club from financial ruin.

Manager Garry Hill, coach Kevin Hales, and the entire squad of players have been released or transfer-listed by club chairman Martyn Harrison.

Mr Harrison says the decision has been taken as part of a major financial "restructuring" of the club.

Club captain Ben Smith said "shocked" players were told the news by the manager at training on Tuesday afternoon.

As well as captain Ben Smith, three other ex Hereford players are at the club, Tony James , Matt Baker, and Chukki Eribenne.

Smith moved to Weymouth from Shrewsbury. It was reported at the time that the Terras given him a very good deal. Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, was believed to have been interested in re-signing Smith but didn't feel able to compete with the deal he had been offered.

Meanwhile Garry Hill was due to take the Weymouth abroad this week for training however this has been cancelled.

"I'm stunned, I loved it at Weymouth, the supporters have been great to us," he told BBC Radio Solent
