Punished By One Mistake Said Beadle

After this afternoon's 1-1 draw against Merthyr Town at Edgar Street, Hereford manager Peter Beadle spoke to the media about the game.

"I thought it was good, we had lots of good things in it," said Beadle.

"I just felt we played great between the boxes but we've lacked a little bit of quality in the final third from the front four just in general. May be just not got that sharpness, that interlink.

"We've had four half chances today, even the goal was a half chance, it wasn't a clear cut one.

"Gethin had one just before which he put wide, Dara had a header, not a clear header, which he managed to get on target, and Jamie Molyneux had a header in the first half.

"Really that was it and that's not like us. We used to creating more chances. We had lots of balls into the box but no real clear cut chances.

"And as always we've been punished by one mistake.

"They never looked like they were going to score a goal today, we looked really comfortable defensively but then all of a sudden one mistake, a silly free kick and the lad puts it in the net.

"I thought we were better than them on the day, between the boxes I thought we played very well, they didn't have too many excersions into our box.

"We had plenty into theirs but didn't have that cutting edge today. If the front four had been a bit sharper - they've been great but I put it down to that four hour journey last Saturday in a hot bus, then the game which the lads did great in and more chances with Dan picking up that injury and then not getting back to 9pm, maybe later than that on a hot bus again.

"It's hard for the boys as they've had one days rest and they've got to come and do it all again on a big pitch and I thought they did it great in spells.

"Whereas Merthyr were at home on Saturday so they get home early, feet up and an hours trip to come here today. So maybe they were a bit fresher.

"I certainly thought we worked hard and plugged away and we certainly didn't deserve to lose the game that was for sure."

The referee came in for some criticism from Beadle.

"It wasn't any more physical than you would have thought for a derby game. I thought he got the penalty decision wrong, first half clear penalty. He protected himself a little bit by saying he got a nudge in the back. The boy has run underneath the ball and put his hand up. I thought it was handball all day long.

"And then one minute he gives a foul for a push in the back and the next he doesn't. It wasn't just for us, it goes both ways. Frustrating, inconsistant again like it was on Saturday and like it was the week before that.

"But we can't use that as an excuse, we've got to get on with it."

Asked about Merthyr, Beadle said that they had been in the division for a couple of seasons.

"They are used to this level of football, seeing games out, but we dominated today's game, 60% possession but we just need to be a bit more clinical in both boxes, a little bit brighter in the final third of the pitch and if we do that then we'll be fine.

"I can't fault the lads effort again today, especially on a baking hot day and a derby game and after spending most of Saturday on the bus.

"If someone had said to you before the weekend would you be happy with four points, maybe you would be, but after the performances we see it as two points dropped. However four points isn't a bad haul and we go on to next weekend."

Dan Preston didn't play today after hurting his ankle on Saturday.

"He caught his studa in the ground and he felt pain in his calf on Saturday, it settled down over the weekend, went for a x-ray and there is no damage to the bones or anything there. It's basically a sprained ankle so there's a chance he maybe okay for net weekend, if he's available for next weekend so we'll wait and see. Hopefully nothing too serious.

"Ryan now he's had his injection we've been told seven days, so hopefully he'll be okay for next weekend. He says he feels a lot better so hopefully that's put to bed as long as he can get some fitness back.

"It's been a stop start first five games with the change in players which we are having to make rather than we want to. You look at the bench today and we've got three midfielders and a winger so it's not ideal at the moment. There's no variation in there so we need to get a few more back now and then when we do there's even less excuse because we've got everyone to choose from."

The next game is on Saturday in the FA Cup.

"We're not going to train Tuesday, a few days rest now, they will be going back to their jobs tomorrow. They've had a full on weekend travelling, playing game so they've not had any chance to enjoy it.

"We'll just train on Thursday and we'll see how back but I'm not anticipating having Dinsley, Deaman, Smith to be training on Thursday."

Asked about the Cup Game on Saturday.

"We want to put out our strongest team but if one or two do recover and are available it will give us a bit more variation, at leat on the bench may be."
