After receiving a hefty sell on fee when Darren Peacock was sold from QPR to Newcastle that spring. Greg Downs invested heavily in the squad. The likes of Steve White, Richard Wilkins, Nicky Cross, Dean Smith and Tony James arrived at Edgar Street. After a slow start Downs was sacked mid September, and his assistant John Layton took over.
