Traffic Disruption Close To Edgar Street

This from Herefordshire Council:

TEMPORARY ONE-WAY SYSTEM ON WIDEMARSH STREET

Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, on behalf of Herefordshire Council will implement a temporary one-way system on Widemarsh Street, which will commence on the 10 October 2016. The system will run in a southerly direction from the Newtown roundabout to Blackfriars Street. This is to allow construction of the new City Link Road and Widemarsh Street Junction.

The one-way system is expected to be in place until January 2017.

Project Manager, Andrew Davies for Alun Griffiths said, “I would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we undertake these essential works. We will ensure that any disruption is kept a minimum and the work is completed as swiftly and efficiently as possible.”

The City Link Road (CLR) is part of a large scale inner city regeneration project which includes the Old Market, Widemarsh Street, Merton Meadow car park and other key areas within the city. It will provide hundreds of new homes and help provide hundreds of new jobs.

In the region of 800 new homes, 35 per cent of which will be affordable, are planned to be built across the site. The new road will open up access to areas for development and regeneration which are currently inaccessible or difficult to access and it will also alleviate some of the volume of heavy traffic from Hereford's inner ring road.

The road is part of a package of measures which will enable Commercial Road, Newmarket and Blue School Streets to be upgraded for easier pedestrian movement and also reduce 'through traffic' which will be transferred to the link road. Improvements will also include the provision of a new transport hub at the railway station.
