Williams: You Can't Underestimate The Fans

Hereford FC Vice-Chairman Chris Williams spoke on BBC Hereford and Worcester this morning about what has been achieved in the 16 months since Hereford United was wound up.

“I’m a very happy chap!” Williams told Elliot and Toni on the Breakfast Show

“It’s a case of trying to build on what we’ve got. I don’t think we’ve ever had a foundation that this new football club has had to build on like we’ve had in the past.

“There’s never been anything like that.

“There should be a real optimism about the city. We’ve got a Wembley Final to come, another final to come. There could be a real chance here for football in Hereford to take off.”

The challenge will get tougher as Hereford move up the leagues, but at least there is a football club in Hereford again.

“When I first got involved, the whole thing I wanted to do was get football back at Hereford.

“Any club any where else would’ve started, but to have it at Edgar Street, to have the team playing in White shirts, whatever the team is called, that’s Hereford United.

“And that’s the home of football in Herefordshire.”

The fans have been incredible this season, there hasn’t been a league game at home with less than 2,000 in attendance.

“What you can’t underestimate is two things – number one, the fans.

“The fans have come back and supported the club right the way through. And the joy that people portray when they talk to me about it is fantastic really.

“The second this is the privilege of sitting next to Graham Turner at the home game on Saturday.

“He was saying we could’ve employed anybody to manage this squad and we should’ve done okay.

“But nobody would’ve been better than Peter Beadle and what he’s done with the club.”

Meanwhile, Ronaldo the bull will be at Wembley.

“It was one thing to get the bull around Edgar Street for the first game of the season, but all the risk assessments to get the bull to Wembley.

“It’s a totally different ball game.

“We’ve really had to work hard to get there.”
