This Is Potentially The Biggest Game in Britain said George

Hereford United legend Ricky George was interviewed earlier on BBC Hereford and Worcester ahead of today’s match at Salisbury.

“This is incredible,” George told BBC H&W’s Andrew Easton.

“The more you read, the more incredible the story is. The Western Daily Press got it absolutely right, their headline was ‘This is the most remarkable football match in Britain today.’

“You’ve got the Manchester Derby, you’ve got Leicester at Crystal Palace, all the other huge games on, this is potentially the biggest game in Britain."

Andrew Easton then moved the topic of conversation onto the fans.

“It never ceases to amazes me how incredible football fans are.

“In the days I was playing, these things didn’t happen. You didn’t have rogue owners take over football club and then see the demise of them.

“In this day and age it happens more and more.

“When it happened in Hereford last year, I was speaking to my old playing colleague Billy Meadows and he was in tears on the phone. He said, ‘what’s going to happen now?’ and I said you can never ever underestimate the fans, the supporters, of both these clubs, Hereford and Salisbury have turned them around.

“I knew that would happen.

“The most important thing apart from getting another club on the map was to continue to play at Edgar Street because that’s the spiritual home.

“It’s an amazing achievement and you have to thank the fans, the supporters.”

“Absolutely amazing from day one,” Hereford supporter Sarah Prosser added.

“To see that Edgar Street ground packed out on that very first game, and then the first game of the season.

“They’re just memories you won’t forget.”

At the end of the interview, Ricky George reminded listeners of his first season at Edgar Street.

“We were in an FA Trophy Semi Final; we were 90 minutes from Wembley.

“It’s identical.

“We played Hillingdon Borough at Leicester City’s old ground Filbert Street.

“We lost 2-1.

“Obviously now this is the closest the club have got since then. It would be amazing and would cap everything that’s happened in the last 12 months.”
