HMRC Expecting Club To Pay Outstanding Maternity Bill

Former club receptionist Leigh Renton is still owed maternity pay by the club despite previous assurances the sum would be settled.

After a lengthy dispute over payment, Leigh turned to HMRC - who made the statutory Government payment to the club some months ago. They have since recalculated the amount owed by the club from £1,200 to £1,600.

Leigh, who has two young children and has relied on her family to cover bills for several weeks, received £600 from the club a month ago as an 'emergency payment' but has heard little from Hereford United since with £1,000 still outstanding.

The Southern League have continued their wall of silence since HUST put out a call for them to explain their actions five days ago.

The League, led by chairman Ken Turner and Secretary Jason Mills, have refused to explain why they have lifted a transfer embargo on the club without ensuring all football creditors had been paid.

In a statement on Monday, Turner said: "I am pleased to confirm that Hereford United Football Club has transferred appropriate funds to all known Football Creditors apart from a few who have not, as yet, notified officials of their required details."

However, with Leigh Renton and dozens of other creditors receiving only part payments, it is plain to see that Turner has issued a clearly false statement with the club having correct details but continuing to refuse to make payment.

Rob Purdie confirmed on Twitter that he told the League nine days ago that only one player had received their full sum, and yet Turner and Mills allowed the club to sign thirteen new players.

At a time when the FA issued new rules over betting to 'protect the integrity' of the game, they now need to act to ensure the integrity of the Southern League is not called into dispute.
