Morecambe Top The Pie Chart


Morecambe Football Club have won the Supreme Champion at the recent British Pie Awards with their Bramley apple pie.

The club were also champions in the Football Pie Class with their chicken, ham and leek pie.

"The competition was tougher than ever this year which makes Morecambe FC's achievement all the more impressive," said Matthew O'Callaghan, chairman of the Melon Mowbray Pork Pie Association.

There were 825 entries in 19 different categories.

The results, announced at a special awards lunch yesterday (1 May), followed the previous day’s judging at St Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray, where 825 entries were tested and scored across 19 different categories.

Morecambe FC was also named the Football Pie Class Champion for its Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie.

Walker & Son took all three top spots in the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie class, with The Outdoor Pig Company named winner in the Bpex-sponsored Pork Pie category, for its Family Pork Pie.

Boghall Butchers took the top spot in the Steak and Kidney, Vegetarian Pie, and Pie Fit For A Hero categories, while The Pie Kitchen was triumphant in the Beef & Any flavour combination category for its Steak, Binham Blue & Portobellini Pie.

In the Lamb class, sponsored by Quality Meat Scotland, the Great North Pie Company won with its Lamb, Ale & Mint Pie.
