MP Norman Speaks To H&W

Hereford MP Jesse Norman spoke to BBC Hereford & Worcester yesterday afternoon about his call to debate football funding in Parliament.

"There needs to be a fundamental re-alignment." he told Andrew Easton, "We need to have a new settlement in football which allows some of the money that's made at the top of the game to flow through in greater amounts than it does at the moment."

Norman admits that a Parliamentary debate won't solve the short term problem facing the Bulls presently: "We need the much bigger picture to be addressed but that isn't necessarily going to help the club in the situation it's caught in currently."

When asked why the club, as a privately owned company, deserves special help he added: "While technically it's true, football clubs aren't owned in the same way. The ownership comes from paying your money every week. It comes from pouring your heart and soul into it.

"I've asked people to write to me and tell me how they feel about the club and, frankly, it's absolutely unbelievable. One guy says 'it really hurts me to think about what could happen to my beloved team' and another says 'the Bulls' past is inextricably linked to my own child and adult life. I've made lifelong friends and my own children now enjoy the matchday experience at Edgar Street.'

"It goes beyond that normal feeling of ownership and the supporters, and the people around the club, often feel they have at least as much ownership as the folks who actually control the shares."
