Hereford United youth got their League season off to a
successful start with a 3-1 away win at Newport County on Saturday morning.
Goals from Ben Miller, Jarod Bowen and Max Kontic secured
the points in the match played at Cardiff University.
Here's a report from the Newport County OS:
Newport County AFC returned to the Football League Youth Alliance fold with an opening day fixture against Hereford United played at the University Playing Fields, Llanrumney before moving to their new home at Spytty Park for future home matches. It was a case of old versus the new in the dug out with Peter Beadle and Steve Jenkins looking after the Hereford United Youth Team. On a crisp, clear morning both teams took time to settle as the usual nerves of the start of the season were in evidence. Newport County began to exert more influence and forced several corners before Spencer Woods saw a volley directed straight at Hereford keeper Owen Evans after a pin-point cross by Jordan Rathbone. Hereford started to come into the game as the half progressed and took the lead in the 37th minute when Jarrod Bowen volleyed low in to the corner from just outside the six yard box after clever approach play by Tom Brock. Before Newport had a chance to respond a speculative 20 yard drive from Hereford's Max Kontic bounced viciously in front of Connor Christie before hitting the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 half time lead.
Newport County started brightly in the second half and after 51 minutes a strong run to the by-line by Omar Belhaldeen resultled in a cut back that was headed over by the on rushing Ben Brooks. A series of substitutions from both teams around the hour mark provided fresh impetus with Aaron Collins and Joe Ward giving Newport further options in attack. It was one of the substitutes for Newport who won a penalty for the County after 77 minutes as the referee adjudged Cory Saunders to have unfairly halted Collins' determined run into the box. Brooks coolly slotted the penalty low to the left of Evans who could only parry the effort onto the post before it nestled in the net. At 2-1 Newport County felt the momentum was with them to earn something from their efforts but just a minute later Hereford substitute Ben Miller lashed the ball home from an acute angle that lodged in the stantion. Newport attempted to force the issue in the final 10 minutes but a strong Hereford side held on comfortably to claim a 3-1 win.
