Southport Appoint Wright

Southport have named former Aston Villa defender Alan Wright as their new manager.

The 41 year old quit playing two years ago after a spell as player/coach at Fleetwood, and spent time as Martin Foyle's no.2 at Northwich before briefly taking the manager's chair after Foyle's departure. Wright has named Blackpool youth coach John Hills as his no.2.

Meanwhile, Macclesfield chief executive Jon Harris has told fans to be patient while they wait to appoint a new manager. It is now six weeks since Steve King was axed as boss, with Harris telling the local press:

“We had hoped to have a manager in place at this stage and that he would be planning for the season ahead but I can only reiterate that we as a club feel it’s more important to install the right man, rather than to make a quick appointment.

“What we are able to say is that when we do announce the identity of our next manager, one that we feel will be best suited to our aims of mounting a genuine challenge for promotion back to League Two, I feel sure that the wait will have been worthwhile.”

The Non-League Paper claimed ten days ago that Robbie Fowler was set to be appointed, but Fowler refuted claims that he was prepared to work for free.
