AFC Telford were formed in 2004 following the demise of the old Telford United (formally Wellington Town) and played their first games in the Northern Premier League in 04/05. Rapid progression brought them to The Conference National for season 2011/12 where they finished in 20th position.
This season has been less kind to The Bucks with relegation from the National league already confirmed for next season. We wish them a speedy return, as it would be good to see a team from Shropshire playing at a high level in their own town.
The New Bucks Head is a modern 6300 capacity stadium of which 2200 are seated. Visiting fans are mainly accommodated on the covered Frank Nagington Terrace at one end of the ground. Seats are sometimes provided in part of the Sir Stephen Roberts (West) Stand. Admission is believed to be £14 for adults, £11 for concessions, £6 for U18’s and £2 for U14’s (with an adult).
HUISA – Departs from Radford’s at 2.30pm with a fare of £13 (non-members £15). Seats can be booked through The Club office (08442 761939).
BY CAR – Travel north on the A49 to the junction with A5 just south of Slopbury. At the roundabout, take the third exit and follow signs for Telford (M54). Leave the M54 at junction 6 and take the first exit off the roundabout onto the A5223 (sign Telford West/Whitchurch/Hospital). Go past Tescos on your left and then at the Ketley Brook roundabout, turn left onto Bennetts Bank (B5061). The entrance to the Club car park is a short way down this road on your right. It costs £3 per car, whilst disabled badge holders are admitted free.
TRAIN – Wellington station is situated just under a mile from the ground and is served by trains from Birmingham (New Street) to the east and Shrewsbury to the west. It has been suggested that, while taking a little longer, there are better deals to be had by using the Birmingham route. Fans are advised to check and decide on their own arrangements. The 44 and 55 buses pass the ground and can be taken from the Wellington bus terminal near the train station.
REFRESHMENTS – The usual football fare is served from a kiosk inside the ground including, I believe, some alcohol. The Cock Hotel is a well-known CAMRA pub and is a five-minute walk away while the Dugout Bar is in the Whitehouse Hotel adjacent to the ground and has Sky screens. The local Wetherspoons is The William Withering in New Street near the railway station.
