A series of
themed events is set to run in the county throughout the week of 3-7
December.
The events
are part of the Disability Positive project, a partnership of local people and
organisations working together to improve the lives of disabled people in
Herefordshire. The objective of
Disability Positive is to improve the participation of disabled people in all
aspects of society.
The week’s
events include exhibitions, seminars, a public information event and performing
arts events. Laurence Clark, stand-up
comedian, writer, actor and disability rights campaigner, will be performing at
the Starlite Rooms, Hereford United Football Club on 6 December. Speakers at other events include Richard
Rieser, Simone Aspis, Mark Shrimpton, Peter Coleridge and Baroness Pitkeathley.
Harriet
Yellin, diversity officer from Herefordshire Council, said: “We have a really varied programme of events
during Disability Positive week, ranging from disability sport to a
presentation on international development.
So we hope that there’s something for everyone, both disabled and
non-disabled.”
Sylvie
Nicholls of Herefordshire Disability United, said: “We know that getting out
and about can be really difficult sometimes, particularly for disabled
people. So it’s important that people
tell us if they need help to attend an event, because we will do what we can to
help. For example, we might be able to give someone a lift if they don’t drive.”
Full details
of all the events can be found online at Disability Positive, programmes are also available in council
customer service offices around the county, or you can request one by calling
