Former Hereford United director John Jackson has died. He was 87.
Jackson will be especially remembered for being the first chairman of the VP (Vice-presidents) club at Edgar Street. He also ran the Salmon Inn for many years.
Ted Woodriffe wrote about Jackson in John Williamson's book '50 Years at Edgar Street'.
'The need for a special club to accomodate supporters drawn from the professions and business sphere was visualised by Mr Miles (then chairman) and club director John Jackson soon after the club launched their campaign for Football League status.
'In April 1971 a meeting was held at the Salmon Inn when it was agreed to form the Vice-Presidents' club for "the purposes of furthering the aims ond ambitions of Hereford United.
'Mr Jackson was appointed the first chairman and he worked around the clock to ensure that suitable premises would be available for members by the start of the new season.
'The first pint was officially pulled in the new club lounge on September 1st and by the end of the first financial year the club had covered the cost of the conversion work and had money in the bank.
'After a two year stint Mr Jackson handed over the chairmanship to Mr Duncan Heins'.
Jackson was a director of Hereford United from 1972 to 1988.
