A Million Pennies - End of the Road

Readers of BN may remember we recently gave some publicity to a campaign to place A Million Pennies on the Edgar Street pitch. Unfortunately the campaign has had to be abandoned.

Will Davies, who has put so much hard work into the project, explains:

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that I email BN this morning.

I have no option but to end the Million campaign. This is due to a combination of factors, though in most part it is down to the fact that promises were not upheld, (many schools committed themselves to bag totals which were not reached), as well as recent emails from committed schools withdrawing their support.

The most significant problem has been too many individual schools not sticking to their commitment. This makes it very hard for those who have stuck to the task.

I'm suggesting that all the monies/pennies collected are given to St Michaels - that is where our 300+ pounds will go to. If all schools do so as well, then St Michaels will receive well over 2000 pounds.

This is a real disappointment for those who have worked very hard to make this happen - including many children from around the county.

Unfortunately there is only so much that one can do and at this stage I believe that, as a full time working professional, I have done as much as I possibly can - including advertising over a period of 18 months, over 300 emails, (I have them all saved...), many meetings, giving up a great deal of my own personal time, etc.

It was an idea that many people had - I simply put my hand up and said that I'd organise it. Ultimately there was not enough support to see the project through.

Can I take this opportunity to THANK those who worked hard to meet and exceed their committed totals as well as to Matthew Land and Lee Card who have also worked very hard to help to make things happen. Thank you to Tim Russon at Hereford United for his commitment, to Anika at St. Michales and to Mark at the Hereford Times.

Best wishes

Will Davies
