Bulls pick up first point at Wimbledon

Hereford United collected their first point of the season this afternoon when they held AFC Wimbledon to a draw at Kingsmeadow.  Delroy Facey opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Jack Midson equalised just before the half hour mark.

Manager Jamie Pitman made changes to his team giving starts to loan keeper David Cornell, left sided Simon Clist and French defender Benoit Dalibard.  Danny Williams also came off the bench to make his Football League debut for The Bulls.

Both teams showed attacking intent from the off with Fleetwood first to test the home keeper with a crisp free kick.  Harry Pell also saw an early effort saved by Brown before, with eight minutes gone, The Bulls took the lead.  Dalibard curled in a teasing cross from the left and Facey rose to nod past Seb Brown.

Shortly afterwards, Dalibard was forced to leave the field with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was replaced by Kenny Lunt.  Simon Clist moved to left back allowing Lunt to assume a midfield role.  Joe Colbeck’s long-range shot was comfortably dealt with and Fleetwood almost got clear but was caught by the linesman’s flag while Charles Ademeno’s shot was deflected for a corner.  The flag kick was swung in by Hatton and Jack Midson glanced a header in for the equaliser on twenty-five minutes.

On thirty-two minutes, Stefan Stam joined Dalibard on the hamstring injury list as he limped off to be replaced by Danny Williams.  Green moved to the centre of defence alongside Townsend and Williams filled in at right back.

The two teams continued to contribute to an end-to-end match.  Colbeck saw goalbound shot blocked and Midson got the ball into the net only for it to be ruled out by a flagging referee’s assistant.  Colbeck got behind his fullback but his driven cross was too close to the keeper and the threat past without danger. And Facey’s header skidded past the post with Brown struggling to cover.

The second period produced much of the same attacking play from both sides but without further score.

Sammy Moore shot straight at Cornell and then Townsend, while generally having a better game, conceded his customary free-kick just outside the box.  The free kick from right was stabbed goalward but was cleared off the line by Ryan Green.  At the other end, Facey almost put The Bulls back in front with a fine header which Brown just got too and Fleetwood also brought a save from Brown with the resulting corner bringing another header from Facey which finished on the roof of the net.

Pitman introduced Arquin in place of Delroy with around fifteen minutes remaining.  Colbeck had two attempts from inside the box but both went wide before Arquin broke through only to be foiled by a block from Brown.

Danny Williams got in a couple of vital clearing headers as the hosts pushed for a late winner

Hereford: Cornell; Green, Pell, Townsend, Fleetwood, Featherstone, Facey (Arquin 73), Colbeck, Clist, Dalibard (Lunt 17), Stam (Williams 31). Subs unused: Hoult, McQuilkin.

Wimbledon: Brown, Hatton, Gwillim, Wellard, Stuart, Johnson, Yussuff, S Moore (Minshull 72), Midson, L Moore, Ademeno (Jolley 77). Subs unused: Bush, Turner, Porter.

This was a much-improved performance compared to the second half on Tuesday and Pitman will be pleased with the initial contributions from the newcomers.  Dalibart, albeit for a short period showed promise while ‘keeper Cornell did what was asked of him and Simon Clist displayed the right qualities.  Mention should also be made of Danny Williams who put in a solid shift in the unfamiliar defensive position.

See you at Villa Park on Tuesday.
