Manset joined the Bulls in September 2009

Mathieu Manset, pictured celebrating his last goal for the Bulls, joined Hereford United in September 2009.

And the first supporters knew about him was after he had played in a reserve match at the Wolves training ground on Tuesday September 22nd. He spent 70 minutes on the pitch.

Listed as Manset, it soon emerged that he was a Frenchman who had recently played for Le Havre.

Then on September 25th the club revealed he had signed a contract initially until January.

John Trewick was manager at the time and, no doubt, he could see Manset was a player with potential although probably rather unfit.

On October 2nd, Trewick said that there will still problems with international clearance for Manset. Nevertheless he had already put his faith in the Frenchman.

"Mathieu Manset has signed for us, he's no longer on a short term deal."

By October 6th he was deemed fit enough to make his first team debut as a substitute for Hereford United against Aldershot in the Paint Trophy. He came on in the 72nd minute.

This from the BN match report:

A rampaging run by the irrepressible King bobbled through to Manset who gleefully fired it home to set off wild celebrations for a dream debut.

And to shouts of 'The Beast'.

The game ended 2-2 and Manset won the game for the Bulls with his penalty.

"Big Mathieu came on at the end and got a goal," manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"The script was written for him so hopefully we can add him into the proceedings now.

"He's a big target man and he's got a good touch and he's an intelligent player so we think we've got a good prospect on our hands.

"I'm quite excited about the future for him and perhaps what we can do with him."

A few days later Trewick was again signing the Frenchman's praises.

"He's been here a couple of weeks now and we looked at him straight away and felt he had some great attributes," commented Trewick.

"We feel if we work with him we've got a good player on our hands."

It also emerged that Manset was being helped by Guy Ipoua.

"Guy has been coaching me in my movement and in how to score goals," Manset told the Hereford Times.

"He has given me lots of good advice.

"Now I’m looking forward to carrying on playing and scoring goals.

"I like life in Hereford. The people are very nice here and I’ve no problems."

Onto the following Saturday and an away game against Rotherham at the Don Valley Stadium. Manset came on at the start of the second half.

After the game came the comments about him.

"He is such a big lad," said defender Ryan Green. "He is strong and quick and we have good prospect on our hands there."

Ronnie Moore Rotherham:

"We got roughed up a bit in the second half when their big lad came on. He dictated to our centre-backs where we were going and what we were doing. You have got to be bigger and better than that."

John Trewick Hereford:

"Rotherham were dominating us physically in the first half all over the field and I felt we needed a bit more presence and Mathieu Manset got's that and he started rattling their defenders."

And that was just the start of 16 months of Mathieu Manset at Hereford United.

He will be missed but not forgotten.
