Adam Stansfield, whose death was announced yesterday, joined Hereford United from Yeovil Town in June 2004 and played for the Bulls in the following two seasons, his last appearance being in the Conference play-off final at the Walkers Stadium in May 2006 before he moved to Exeter.
Below is a look back at the first of two eventful years with the Bulls.
Stansfield's move to Hereford was announced on June 15th 2004.
"I think he has a decent record, and if we supply him with chances he is more than capable of finishing them off," said manager Graham Turner. "I think he will be an asset to us.
"He just impressed me at Yeovil. He scored goals, around 16 in 30 games, which is better than 1 in 2, but he was unfortunate in his second session when he broke his leg.
"He's got a bit of pace, and he is very, very mobile."
It had been a difficult decision to move to Hereford as his former manager at Yeovil Gary Johnston explained.
"Adam called and asked my advice and it was a difficult decision for me to make," said Johnston.
"He's a great lad who trains 100% and plays 100%, but I had to make room to bring one or two in and I believe Hereford are a club who play the sort of football that he could thrive on. I just hope this doesn't come back to haunt me and make me look an idiot for letting him go."
Stansfield had an uneventful debut for the Bulls on August 14th in the first Conference game against Farnborough which the Bulls won 3-1. However on the following Tuesday he scored his first goal for the Bulls at Crawley in a 1-1 draw.
Four minutes later, United got a deserved goal. Travis got the ball on the right from Stanley and crossed to the near post where Stansfield was on hand to head across goal and into the far bottom corner.
On Bank Holiday Monday the Bulls played at Northwich and Stansfield nearly scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory.
"The ball came across from Pitman and I managed to strike it first time and it just squirmed underneath the keeper's dive," he said.
"The second one was good work from Simon Travis down the wing. He checked back and whipped the cross in and I got my head on it over the keeper.
"I thought I'd scored again but the linesman ruled it offside."
Stansfield came off the bench on September 25th at Leigh RMI and scored twice in a 4-3 win for the Bulls.
"Adam has been unfortunate as he has been out of the side for the last three games but he's come on today and done a job," said fellow striker Lee Mills.
Later Stansfield was voted Conference player of the month for September.
"I was surprised even to be shortlisted, let alone winning the award," said Stansfield. "I did not play that many games in the month.
"I scored three goals and probably won the award because of the two I got at Leigh after coming off the bench. They were important goals because at the time we were struggling for a result.
"It's always frustrating to be on the bench, but it's a team game and the manager has to pick the two strikers that he thinks will do the job."
In early November Stansfield picked up a thigh strain in the LDV game against Doncaster but was fit enough to start for the Bulls in their 3-1 FA Cup win at Southport on November 13th. And at Canvey, a week later, he scored twice in a 4-0 victory.
"It was a good result at Canvey," commented Stansfield. "The main thing was just to get our league form back on track. After now winning our two cup games and winning in the league, we feel as though we've turned the corner."
Stansfield scored the Bulls' first goal in 2005 against Exeter. However it was for the Grecians although he made amends later in the game with a simple tap-in.
Later that month high-spending Weymouth made a bid for Stansfield.
"I put a substantial offer in for Adam but Hereford boss Graham Turner turned me down," said manager Steve Johnson, brother of Yeovil boss Gary.
"It's a shame because Stansfield would be an excellent signing but he is one of their leading scorers and naturally don't want to lose him."
A few days later Stansfield was taken to hospital after a clash of heads in the game against Dagenham. He missed a few games and then returned to the squad but only on the bench.
However at Barnet on February 12th he found the back of the net once again but the following week he had to be subbed again because of an on-going ankle problem. He didn't start again for the Bulls until March 15th in a Trophy replay At Hucknall.
Ten days later Stansfield bagged two in a 6-0 win at Farnborough.
"I was sat on the bench for seventy minutes," he said, "and it looked as though we had twelve men. The workrate was brilliant
"The first goal was a good ball from Travis. I got a diving header and it's gone in. The second another good run from Darryl (Taylor), who played really well on the right wing. He put it through and I knocked it over the keeper. I was really pleased."
The striker scored another two goals a few days later against Northwich, and on April 2nd the only goal of the game at Stevenage. The Bulls were now looking as though they would be in the Conference Play-offs and Stansfield was back in-form.
"I had a couple of chances," he said. "One was cleared off the line, one the keeper saved, then a great break down the wing from Rob Purdie and he put a great ball in. The defenders all left it for the keeper and I got it in from six yards."
During April the Bulls rose to second place in the table and Stansfield was again amidst the action. One at Forest Green, and a very important 'perfect cross' for Danny Carey-Bertram at Woking.
The play-offs put the Bulls against Stevenage with the first leg at Broadhall Way and the second at Edgar Street. Stansfield played in both games but like the rest of the squad he was bitterly disappointed that Stevenage were to go through to the final.
In his first season with Hereford United Stansfield scored 25 goals in all competitions, a good return considering he missed a number of games.
And on May 20th he signed a new one year deal.
