Wrexham are the latest club to issue legal threats against an internet message board.
The owners of the Red Passion message board received the threat from solicitors acting on behalf of chairman Geoff Moss, but the threat failed to indentify the postings that caused the offence - and the solicitors demanded payment to disclose such information as a statement from the owner on the Red Passion board states:
"A complaint was received, it however did not provide specific information to the content they found objectionable. I requested specifics so I could remove any objectionable content, as I and others have done many times before.
Sadly I have been notified at 11am that Gamlins will not provide me with that information, without cost. As a result I, or others, do not have the time to read through 222,000 posts inside the 24 hour deadline issued.
Due to this, I have been left with no option but to 'zero' the Red Passion forum posts and re-open the forum to new posts only.
This is very regrettable as the historic record of the forum is being lost, for example many years of Live Match Threads, European Years memories and the like.
I do hope this situation changes, and I am provided with the information requested so I can comply with the request to remove objectionable material and return the RP site to its former glory."
The statement goes on to reference a statement on the club's official website that demands the details of a user posting as 'Henry J', accusing him of running a campaign against the club and phoning sponsors in an attempt to get them to pull out of deals with the club. The claim related to the recent protests over the employment by the club of two people previously convicted of scamming a charity.
In a statement on the forum, 'Henry J' denies phoning sponsors, merely rallying the supporters, and describes the situation as 'farcical'. The scammed charity, the Honeyrose Foundation, has already backed fans in their campaign.
Majority shareholder Moss, for his part, has already said he will 'retreat' from Wrexham, after claiming to have put £4million of his own money into the club, following criticism and abuse from supporters. Despite heavy financial backing, the club lies 14th in the Conference after finishing 15 points short of the play-offs in their first non-league season last term.
