Mad Dog Martin Allen, manager of soon to be League Two Cheltenham Town, has been banned for life from one of the towns pubs after allegedly stripping off to his briefs at a staff night out.
Today's Guardian sums up the events:
A League One football manager was barred from a town-centre pub for allegedly dropping his trousers at an end-of-season staff party, a bar manager said today. The Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen – nicknamed "Mad Dog" – was asked to leave and never return to the Salisbury, in Cheltenham, after allegedly taking his shirt off and parading around the pub with his trousers round his ankles.
The incident is said to have taken place during a staff night out, two days before Cheltenham's relegation fate was sealed by a 1–1 draw at home to Carlisle United.
The bar manager, Kirsty Wiseman, 38, told the Gloucestershire Echo that the former Queens Park Rangers and West Ham midfielder Allen was barred for behaving in a "rowdy manner".
She said: "He soon drew attention to himself by behaving in a rowdy manner, dancing up on the stage with his shirt off, surrounded by women.
"Then, when he was standing in front of the bar, he dropped his trousers, before parading up towards the dancefloor."
After calming down, the 43-year-old Allen, the former manager at Championship side Leicester City, is said to have returned to the dancefloor to resume his antics. Mrs Wiseman added: "He started to unzip his trousers, as if to taunt us, so I said: 'Enough is enough – you're out.'"
Allen was appointed at Cheltenham on 15 September last year, on a three-year contract. After this season's relegation, he will lead the squad in League Two next season.
The club said it would not comment further today, but a statement released to the Gloucestershire Echo said: "Martin Allen would like to apologise for any offence caused by his actions at the end-of-season staff event.
"The incident, while regrettable, was a minor one. No one was hurt, no damage was caused and there was no drunken or abusive behaviour. It was simply a bit of high jinks at the end of an enjoyable evening."
