Turner lightyears ahead of Ferguson

Hereford United manager Graham Turner didn't have much to be pleased about last night at Chesterfield but this post, about the players different managers have purchased, on a League Two site might cheer him up.

The stat was the amount of players Hereford United gaffer/chairman Graham Turner has bought compared with Sir Alex Ferguson but that wasn’t the interesting part. The interesting part was that out of all of Graham Turner’s signings, just 2 of them, he has paid a fee for. It shocked me, I mean obviously most clubs in this division can rarely afford to pay money for players, but considering just how long Graham Turner has been in charge (13 seasons) at Hereford, you’d have thought he’d have paid a fee for more than two of them.

Compare that with current Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson’s spending record at the Posh, more than £600k on two players alone so far this transfer window. Enough to send most League Two club’s out of existence, had they spent that amount.

Now look at the league table, Hereford are three points clear of Peterborough, who are in 5th place and look back at the spending habits again. Graham Turner has relied on free’s and loans, whereas Darren Ferguson can spend large amounts on good young players, yet Hereford find themselves above Peterborough in the table.

Perhaps in League Two it’s more about the manager, the wheeler dealer in the transfer market, the person who can bring a bunch of nobodies together and get them playing as a team and winning matches. Thats not to say Darren Ferguson isn’t a good manager, Graham Turner is just lightyears experience ahead of him, but if there’s one thing we’ve proved during this slightly pointless article, its that’s money in League Two isn’t everything. It can still net you a handy squad and a play-off spot mind….
