Bassett talks about tonights game at Hereford

This edited article comes from the Official Leeds United website.

New assistant manager Dave Bassett is only too aware what this evening's FA Cup first round tie means to Hereford United.

Excitement is building in the town ahead of the clash, and with over 7,000 set to cram into Edgar Street, Hereford are preparing for a big night of cup football.

The TV cameras are in town and Hereford's famous giant-killing act of the 1970s, when Newcastle were beaten, is being talked about again, but United are ready for the task.

"It's in the papers down here about the big clubs they've beaten before and they regard us as another big club they want to beat," said Dave.

"You've got all that romance and magic of the cup, and you can be sure both teams will be going for it.

"The players will be focused on the task ahead. We've made sure they're aware it won't be easy - like Bournemouth in midweek - but they know that.

"Hereford are second and have scored seven goals in their last two games so we are well aware of them and what they are about."

The game represents the final leg of a journey that has taken in over 1200 miles since last weekend - and the players and management have spent more hours travelling than on the training ground.

It's been a whirlwind week for Dave in his first full week as the club's new assistant manager.

"I'm settling in well," he said. "It's been a hectic week and there's been plenty of action, but I'm getting to know people and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

"The Carlisle result was disappointing. You want to get off to a start and we did well in the first half, but not in the second when we didn't perform to the level we needed to.

"We bounced back at Bournemouth which was pleasing. It was difficult down there because they have been lifted with four new players on loan, but it was good to come back with the win and get another three points so quickly after Saturday.

"There's been a lot of travelling and we have to consider the players rest period as well."

With Dennis Wise banned from the touchline, Dave will assume responsibilities in the dug-out with new first team coach John Gannon at Edgar Street this evening.
