Season Preview: Part One

Accrington: Last-20th, Bookies-99/1 (Joint 23rd) - Just about everybody is tipping Accrington for a return to the Conference after just two seasons. High profile departures during last season simply haven't been replaced, and the further loss of Andy Todd to Rotherham will hurt hard. Seven in over the summer, with Lee McEvilly and Roscoe D'Sane the most interesting.

Barnet: Last-14th, Bookies-99/1 (Joint 23rd) - Really cashed in over the summer, generating £500,000 in sales and losing five of last season's first team regulars. The money will be used to shore up the seasons losses than on players, and Paul Fairclough has raided the non-league for most of his new additions. Some of them will have to learn fast about League Two life if they are to stay a League club.

Bradford: Last-Relegated, Bookies-12/1 (3rd) - The Bantams will be called Barnsley Reserves if they take on any more players from the Tykes. Experienced strike pair Peter Thorne and Barry Conlon can score goals, but the midfield is looking inexperienced with most of the incoming players only on loan deals.

Brentford: Last-Relegated, Bookies-20/1 (Joint 9th) - Terry Butcher gets another chance to sink or swim at management. Ten new players, including ex-Bull Alan Connell, haven't set the pulses racing in Bees fans although Connell and former Torquay man Lee Thorpe are both more than capable of scoring goals.

Bury: Last-21st, Bookies-74/1 (Joint 21st) - Now virtually debt free thanks to a good youth policy, Bury won't be ripping up trees this season. The appointment of Keith Alexander as Director of Football seems to have ended Chris Casper's control of the side although he does remain manager in name. Four signings, all defensive, have come in to shore up the back, and the goals of Andy Bishop and Glyn Hurst (33 last season) should see them clear of danger.

Chester: Last-18th, Bookies-50/1 (Joint 18th) - It wouldn't be Chester if they weren't breaking rules - another August, another salary cap exceeded. Bobby Williamson has moulded a side in his image, but the capping rules and lengthy contracts on unwanted players will probably see Chester tread water for a season. Winger Kevin Ellison should excite a few, but the strikers he is feeding don't have much of a track record.
